Meta is seeking Research Interns to join our Text and Speech Machine Translation team in Paris and London. Our team is part of the Facebook AI Research (FAIR) organization within Meta, working to advance the state of the art in machine translation, and deploys these systems at scale to break down language barriers, enable people to understand and communicate with anyone, and to provide a safe experience—no matter what language they speak.

The opportunities and challenges of this work are immense. Billions of people use our services to connect and communicate in their preferred language, but many of these languages lack traditional textual and speech resources and our systems need to be robust to the informal tone, slang and typos often found in daily communication. Our research spans multiple areas across machine learning, including deep learning/neural networks, machine translation, speech translation, natural language understanding and generation, language modeling, pretraining, low-resource NLP, question answering, dialogue, and cross-lingual and cross-domain transfer learning.

As a Research Intern, you will help us apply cutting-edge algorithms to a wide range of machine translation challenges at Facebook. This is a 2023 internship opportunity with start dates from May to September.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform research to advance the science and technology of intelligent machines.
    • Develop novel and accurate translation algorithms and systems, leveraging deep learning and machine learning on big data resources.
    • Contribute research that can be applied to Facebook product development.
    • Analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of various deployed systems.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a MS or Ph.D. degree
    • Experience in PyTorch, Python or C/C++.
    • Research and/or work experience in machine learning, deep learning, and/or Natural Language Processing and/or Speech Processing.
    • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.
    • Comfortable manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources.
    • Research and/or work experience in Machine Translation (text or speech) and/or Automatic Speech Recognition and/or Text or Speech Toxicity detection and/or Language Modeling.
    • Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at workshops or conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, AAAI, ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, Interspeech, ICASSP or similar.
    • Ability to communicate complex research in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.
    • A strong interest in theoretical and empirical research and for answering hard questions with research.
    • Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
    • Experienced with the development of enterprise-level AI, machine learning and deep learning systems, involving big data management and GPU compute.

    About Meta

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
