    About The Role

    A key role across our practice areas, the Junior Data Scientist will help support these practices with continuing growth. The successful candidate will work across a number of projects working closely with the wider team.

    • Analysis and Problem Solving: Work independently to develop and deliver analysis, within an overall project framework set by others, using more sophisticated tools where relevant. Help others team members to develop their own technical skills.
    • Communication Skills: Ability to flex style in day to day contact internally and with clients, in addition to clearly structured written work.
    • Work management skills: Structure and manage your own time to deliver consistently good work under conflicting pressures.
    • Client relationship skills: Build regular contact through day to day project interactions and tailor outputs to different clients.
    • Frontier Ambassador: Contribute to the life of the firm beyond project work.

    Throughout the role you’ll be supported by two experienced mentors and your graduate ‘buddy’.

    The roles will typically commence in September and October 2022

    Responsibilities

    Analysis and Problem Solving

    • Agree with project managers a specific brief for analysis / modelling based on the project requirements and analytical framework. 
    • Deliver, under the supervision of more experienced team members, analysis to that brief, and QA the results. 
    • Source data and set our data requirements, adapting analysis based on data availability. 
    • Analyse large data sets and use complex analytical tools and techniques. 
    • Review results alongside other team members, highlighting key results and agreeing potential implications of the analysis.
    • Develop an understanding of how to present key findings to colleagues and clients.
    • Help other team members to develop their own technical skills.

    Communication 

    • Participate in discussions in internal meetings and flex style depending on the type of meeting. 
    • Engage with clients in a manner that is clear and sensitive to client needs to help facilitate the smooth running of a project (e.g. in emails/calls when requesting data).
    • Provide clear explanations of issues/conclusions and how they were reached. 
    • Apply the appropriate structure of written inputs (e.g. consistent with Minto pyramid) with guidance from project manager. 

    Work management 

    • Manage your own time so you can work independently on complex tasks and deliver consistently.
    • Be aware of wider client timescales and deliverables, taking responsibility for timing and quality of output delivered to project manager. 
    • Work constructively to deliver work jointly with others. 

    Client relationships

    • Show an awareness of client expectations and make suggestions on how to fulfil and exceed those expectations. 
    • Help build effective relationships with members of the client team.

    Frontier Ambassador

    • In line with the firm’s values of Open, Interesting, Profitable and Fun all Data Scientists are expected to;
    • Embed the values of the firm
    • Create a positive experience for clients on projects (e.g. through demonstrating the brand and internal values). 

    What you'll need

    • You will have obtained a minimum 2:1 Bachelors and preferably a Masters, in quantitative subjects (such as data science, applied statistics, economics, mathematics) or equivalent  
    • Knowledge of some of the following software/programming languages: R, Python, Stata, SQL, Mathematica/Matlab, Scala, C++. Familiarity with version control systems such as Git/GitHub would also be desirable.
    • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment, and to upskill others around you.
    • Strong Excel skills
    • Exceptional communication skills (leadership skills, feedback skills, communicating under pressure)
    • Intellectually curious and willing to learn new techniques and apply them to novel problems.
    • Ability to meet deadlines
    • An interest in and understanding of microeconomics, including first-year undergraduate concepts such as externalities, marginal costs and benefits and the impact of competition on markets.
    • An interest in economic methods, such as causal inference and valuation.
    • A fluency in the native language of the country you are applying to (a second language is also desirable, but not essential)
