Join us on an internship at GKN Aerospace and help shape the future of flight
A Truly Global Business
Every day, around the world, we help aircrafts fly further, faster and greener. We’re the world’s leading tier one aerospace supplier of systems and components. With over 15,000 employees across 38 manufacturing sites in 12 countries serving over 90% of the world’s aircraft and engine manufacturers with sales of £2.8bn.
Together as “one GKN” we’re moving our business and industry forward developing technologies that rapidly decarbonise aircraft, and innovating to help build a new generation of aeroplanes that produce zero emissions. We’re putting sustainability at the heart of what we do; driving our objective to becoming a net zero greenhouse gas emissions business before 2050!
Our Global Technology Centre
Our new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility. It acts as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It offers a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy.
Job Summary
Placements in the GKN Additive Technologies and Optimised Metallic (ATOM) cluster are available for enthusiastic candidates seeking to develop knowledge and skill in developing new metallic manufacturing processes for the next generation of aircraft.
We evaluate and develop various technologies such as Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, Advanced Machining, Fabrication and Industry 4.0 technologies. We cultivate new processes for metallic materials & parts using Lasers, Electron Beams, and robots, as well as evaluate new technologies for manufacturing parts for future aircraft platforms.
As a team we have on-site access to well-equipped laboratories for both manufacturing and evaluation. We explore whole value-stream manufacturing using metallographic analysis, mechanical testing, microscopy (Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy), and other methods through our extensive partner network.
Typically you’ll spend around 20-40% of your time hands on with manufacturing or laboratory equipment.
Our internships will offer the opportunity to be involved with at least one of the following:-
- Development of testing campaigns with research partners such as the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and The Welding Institute (TWI)
- Design and manufacture using 3D Printing for Rapid Manufacturing & Tooling (Stratasys 900MC, eos Formiga P110 and various smaller printers)
- Measurement and analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), mechanical testing rigs, metallographic sample preparation, optical microscopy & laser scanning.
- Machining and finishing of samples using state of the art instrumented 5 axis CNC and high specification Wire EDM.
- Development of knowledge on large scale robotic laser based Metallic 3d printing equipment
- Manufacturing optimisation using lean methods or discrete event simulation
- Joining technologies for metallic components (welding & bonding)
- Development of metal forming processes (friction stir welding, modelling & process control)
