About the role
Our programme will offer a range of opportunities in both Clinical Programming and Data Science. Candidates will be able to indicate a preference of which group they offboard into at the end of the rotational programme but will get the option to experience rotations in both.
Clinical Programmers at GSK sit within the Biostatistics function and represent industry leading SAS and R experts for the exquisite delivery (analysis and reporting) of our clinical studies and data submissions to global regulatory agencies. The discipline works globally, spread across regions (UK, EU, US and India) and provides leadership and accountability for all programming aspects for medicines and vaccines within all clinical phases of drug development. A graduate would get hands on experience in the analysis and reporting of clinical trials and play an important role in defining and implementing strategies to modernise data delivery for clinical development.
Data Science, within the Statistics and Data Science Innovation Hub (SDS-IH), is also within the Biostatistics function, working closely alongside Clinical Programming and Clinical Statistics. The group is spread across the UK and US and works with the rest of Biostatistics to develop its modern vision for data science and delivers value to the wider drug Development organization through cross-functional data-driven projects. A graduate will get hands on experience in programming, data wrangling and statistics in R and/or Python.

Our programme is two years long and will usually have 3 rotations. This is to enhance the development of your skills through having a breadth and depth of our business areas. After completing the programme, you will return to the role for which you were hired. The breadth of relevant technical experience, business and interpersonal skills that you will have acquired, together with the mentoring and networking opportunities you will have experienced, will allow you to excel in your career at GSK.
What will you do?
Your rotations will include work in the following areas, but not necessarily all:
- You will collaborate with top clinical scientists and operational experts in the delivery of clinical trial results to progress medicines through drug development.
- You will gain insights into defining programming strategies for clinical trial reporting and regulatory submissions (planning and execution)
- You will receive training in SAS, R and other programming languages and then be asked to apply your newly acquired skills for hands on analysis and reporting of clinical trial data, in adherence to study protocols and statistical analysis plans.
- You will explore and wrangle complex data sources
- You will apply modelling techniques to data in order to answer business questions across Development
- You will produce analytics and visualizations to improve presentation and interpretation of results.
- You will develop tools (applications and coding packages) to support modern Biostatistics ways of working
- You’ll become familiar with industry-wide best practice and help to define and support the use of standards across the Clinical Programming function
- You’ll be encouraged to consider opportunities for the introduction of innovative approaches to improve standard processes. For example, increasing the use of automation for routine tasks and the application of machine learning to drive efficiencies and enable better focus resources.
- You’ll help drive capability development across Clinical Programming to expand the breadth of programming skills beyond SAS and R into languages such as Python and Julia.
