About the role
Global Supply Chain (GSC) is the group within GSK that is responsible for making and supplying medicines and vaccines across the globe. At our manufacturing sites we produce over 2.3 billion medication packs and vaccines doses to 90% of the world's countries.
As a part of your placement year in the Data Analytics, you will be embedded in the business helping drive value from our data. Your role may include: -
- Developing new reports and insights for the business.
- On-demand data analysis and reporting to support our internal customers.
- Working with internal customers like franchise planning from around the world to drive value and insights from our supply chain.
- Highlighting improvement opportunities in inventory management and partnering with the planning organisation for value delivery, and as you become more experienced, leading and delivering the projects
- Building strong relationships within key business functions
- Leading a project to review out current analytical tools and recommending a future forward path
- Developing digital solutions to support the development and manufacture of our products.
- Maintains awareness of new tools, explores new technologies and, when applicable, brings new technology and tools to the site.
You will be applying the skills you already have and developing new skills of your choice which could include data analysis, data science, power BI, advanced excel along with softer skills like team working, problem solving and building relationships. You will work with and learn from an experienced team, who will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

Locations
Please read below about the 3 different locations/roles we are recruiting for across our Industrial Placements. Please note, these are distinct placements and so when you apply you will be able to select preferences of where you would like to be placed if successful. We will accommodate your preference where possible.
Role/Location 1: Barnard Castle
The Barnard Castle site is located in the Northeast of England is sited within the County Durham countryside. Barnard Castle is a key secondary site for GSK with a large number of New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceutical products from Sterile Products (Syringes and Vials) to Liquid Inhalations and Dermatologicals. We have recently opened a new state of the art aseptic digital facility producing biopharamaceuticals.
As a Data Analytics IP at the Barnard Castle site, you will have exposure to modelling and analytics projects in many applied settings from optimising incoming materials scheduling topredicting failures on production lines to working on continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
This wide and varied role will provide you with the opportunity to learn/ use a broad spectrum of tools e.g., coding in Python, R, Java, Microsoft power platform suite, web-based visualisations, to work with both scientific and manufacturing process data for new medicines that GSK are developing, as well as data for medicines that are already licenced to patients. The innovative solutions or data quality improvements you will be involved in directly contribute to either the acceleration of the development of new products or to maintaining the quality of the licenced products.
As your experience grows you will be given the opportunity to lead the delivery and implementation of innovative data solutions or data quality improvements using scientific, supply chain operations, and process performance data, helping you develop project management skills.
This role will appeal to someone who wants to combine skills in digital technology with problem solving capabilities whilst gaining experience of end-to-end pharmaceutical manufacture.
Role/Location 2: GSK House (London)

The Global Supply Chain Analytics function supports the supply chain digitisation agenda through progression to advanced analytical capabilities that enable a more self-driving, agile and resilient supply chain.
As a data analytics IP you will have the opportunity to partner with the global supply chain strategy and services teams, with a mission to support smart decision making with data and drive to value through delivery of targeted activities in the end-to-end pharmaceuticals supply chain.
You will provide analytics support for strategic and operational planning, inventory & service management and drive the digital analytics and automation agenda. You will have support embedding advanced DDA (Digital, Data and Analytics) capabilities developed through a data lake platform, data science capability and leading edge digital analytical tools.
This role will appeal to someone who wants to combine skills in digital technology with problem solving capabilities whilst partnering with different business functions.
Role/Location 3: Ware
Ware is the largest GSK site in the UK with a thriving early talent community, lots of social activities, and a warm and welcoming support network. The Ware Global Supply Chain (GSC) site has modern facilities, uses advanced technologies, and provides amazing development opportunities for future careers. The site manufactures and supplies oral solid dose tablets (for HIV and oncology) and respiratory devices (for asthma and COPD) to over 140 countries across the world, as well as to patients participating in clinical trials, making a real difference to people’s lives. With a focus on new product introduction, it is a key site within the GSK network and an exciting place to work. Situated in the heart of Ware in Hertfordshire, the site has access to beautiful countryside as well as excellent transport links, being only 40 minutes away from London and Cambridge by train.
There are opportunities for data analytic placement students in three teams at our world class manufacturing site- “Digital Factory” team, PAT & Data Analytics team and the Informatics team.
The “Digital Factory” is focused on implementing Smart Manufacturing solutions to ensure manufacturing data can be gathered electronically and made available to the functions who ‘Make’, ‘Move’, ‘Test’ ‘Release’ and ‘Ship’ our products. For this vision to be achieved, the manufacturing data gathered by our systems must be used to accelerate decision making. We must ensure data is available in real time, at the point of use, validated and in an easily visualised format for our internal customers; Production, Technical and Quality, to support batch flow, batch release and investigations.
The data analytics placement role is key in the delivery and implementation of dashboards using web-based platforms to support this vision.
If you are looking to build connections with the GSK Tech organisation and third-party developers, form part of an agile ‘DevOps’ team and provide the tools to support the manufacture of products globally, this opportunity is for you.
The PAT & Data Analytics team is focused on the development and deployment of the next generation Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) and data analytics solutions to better understand and manufacture our products from R&D to Global Supply Chain.
As a placement student, you will have the chance to touch first hand and collect data using some of the advance sensors that we have in our processes besides analysing the data collected by all our systems. You will also build machine learning models using proprietary (Matlab, SIMCA) and/or open-source software (Python) to optimize our operations. Finally. you will have the chance to deploy final solutions by developing customized dashboards or apps GUIs to widespread the adoption of our digital tools.
The Informatics team are focused upon the design, construction and implementation of automated data processes, including data marts, data models, reports, data visualisations and dashboards – to accelerate decision making and support the resolution of issues.
The Informatics team offers a placement student the opportunity to learn/ use a broad spectrum of tools e.g., coding in SAS / Python, Microsoft Power Platform suite, web-basedvisualisations, to work with both scientific and manufacturing process data for new medicines that GSK are developing, as well as data for medicines that are already licenced to patients.The innovative solutions or data quality improvements you will be involved in directly contribute to the either the acceleration of the development of new products or to maintaining the qualityof the licenced products.
