Archives belong to everyone – not just the well-known names!
Would you like to support local people to add their voices, stories, and memories to the archive, so that Basingstoke’s future collections represent the full diversity of its community?
The role
We are looking for a Community Archive Officer who will:
- Build strong relationships with local people and groups
- Inspire and support them to create, preserve, and share their archives
- Help to capture authentic reflections of everyday life in Basingstoke
- Enjoy meeting people and bringing communities together
- Design and run engaging activities like workshops and pop-up film screenings
- Have experience working with volunteers or community groups
- Have a passion about archives, film, history or heritage
You will work with individuals and communities currently under-represented in existing archives. Together, we will co-curate new collections that reflect today’s Basingstoke and celebrate its future screen heritage.
About you
Essential qualifications, skills, knowledge & experience:
- Practical experience working with community groups and/or volunteers
- Good understanding of archives, heritage, community history, or film collections
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and influence others
- Excellent communication skills, with or without support, for public speaking and contributing to report writing
- Creative thinking and a proactive, positive attitude
- Good planning and organisational skills
- Ability to deliver work to deadlines within a project timescale, with or without support
- Experience using social media in a professional context
- Good digital skills, with or without support, to edit video footage and produce promotional material
- Attention to detail when handling archive material
- Ability to travel around Basingstoke with or without support
Desirable qualifications, skills, knowledge & experience:
- Enthusiasm for archive film, community storytelling, or cultural heritage
- Experience of running workshops or community engagement activities
- Knowledge of safeguarding and inclusive practice when working with communities
You do not need to be an expert filmmaker – but basic knowledge of video recording and supporting others to tell their own stories will be valuable.
This is a fixed-term role for 12 months, full-time (37 hours per week). You must be able to travel around Basingstoke, with occasional visits elsewhere in Hampshire.
We actively welcome applicants from all backgrounds and lived experiences.
If this sounds exciting, we would love to hear from you!
