Do you have a degree or postgraduate degree in Public Health or related discipline such as Health Promotion, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Human Geography, Anthropology. Do you live in either of the Hampshire County Council or Southampton City Council geographies?

If your answers are yes to the above questions, then this exciting opportunity may be for you.

    What we look for

We strive to represent the diverse communities of Hampshire and are passionate about creating an environment where all staff and volunteers feel respected and heard.

Being a diverse organisation with an inclusive culture is integral to us being able to meet our aim of ensuring that we reduce the unfair gap in healthy life years between the most and least healthy. To grow a diverse and representative workforce we particularly welcome applications from:

    • People from a minority ethnic group.
    • People with personal experience or links with communities experiencing health inequalities and social exclusion.
    • People living with a long-term health condition or disability.
    • People from a community experiencing deprivation.

    About the graduate trainee role

Hampshire County Council are recruiting a Public Health Practitioner Graduate Trainee to start work in September 2023. This will be a 2.5-year fixed term contract. During the 2.5 years, you will gain hands-on experience of public health delivery.

You will be supported through a structured development programme, building on your existing knowledge through further training and education to broaden your knowledge, understanding and application across all areas of public health.

There will be the opportunity to complete placements and/or projects to gain a broad understanding across the three domains of public health and undertake the UKPHR Public Health Practitioner registration process to become a registered Public Health Practitioner.

In return, we are committed to your continued personal development and offer an extensive Benefits Package. We recognise the benefits hybrid working can bring, so you’ll be able to work remotely (with equipment provided) with office-based working in Winchester once a fortnight. You may be required to visit other locations within Hampshire to attend training and meetings, and therefore need to have the ability to travel, as necessary.

Please note that you must have the right to work in the UK to be eligible for this role.

    Values based recruitment

We are passionate about our values:

    • Collaborative: Working together, combining talents and sharing resources to shape decisions and actions, and to maximise health outcomes.
    • Equalities-driven: Reducing inequalities and promoting equity in all we do, so that no one is left behind as we strive for better health and wellbeing.
    • Outcome focussed: Prioritising our work based on evidence, effectiveness and value for money to improve quality outcomes and prevent ill health.
    • Sustainable: Being future-focussed. Creating lasting change in local systems and communities. Developing our work through a climate change lens to achieve health and climate benefits.

We practice values-based recruitment in Public Health and invite you to evidence how you demonstrate our values in your application. The interview for the role will also be values based and will explore how you will be able to contribute to these.

Hampshire County Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults. We expect all employees, workers and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment.

In order to combat discrimination, no unnecessary conditions or requirements will be applied which could have a disproportionately adverse effect on any one group. All sections of the population will have equal access to jobs. No applicant or employee will receive less favourable treatment because of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage or civil partnership and pregnancy or maternity, unless a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) applies.

We are a Disability Confident Employer – committed to ensuring that our recruitment and selection process is inclusive and accessible.
