Broaden your understanding of planning and share your knowledge with thousands of our readers

Are you interested in learning about all areas of town and country planning - everything from back garden trapezes to garden villages and everything in between? At DCP manual and COMPASS Online, we're looking for a new Planning Content Editor to create high quality editorial content that helps planning professionals do their jobs better. You’ll get to explore everything from local initiatives to large-scale developments and build your own expertise along the way through our expert training.

    The role

This role involves updating our definitive guide to planning appeals (DCP), and writing summaries for COMPASS, which is the planning professions’ choice for locating key appeals. You’ll also assist in the creation of special reports on topics including Biodiversity Net Gain and Obesogenic Environments.

This role would suit someone with at least one year of development management experience in either public or private planning but graduates in planning, geography, social sciences or related subjects are encouraged to apply. This is an excellent opportunity to pursue RTPI membership, launch a planning career, or leverage your existing expertise on products used by thousands.

We would also like to hear from those that have worked in a planning environment and have experience in writing reports, application/appeal statements or documents for public consumption.

     Responsibilities

    • Summarise and categorise appeals for the COMPASS database so that clients can find appeals that are relevant to them. This involves coding appeals with details such as the type of development, issues raised, appeal procedure type etc.
    • Research news articles, key court cases and appeal precedents, and add them to DCP so that clients are quickly informed of what is happening in the planning sector.
    • Edit sections of the DCP guide, researching what the latest policy and legislation is on a given topic and revising the guide accordingly.
    • Help develop our existing products and create new ones for the planning sector. This includes working as a researcher for our In-Depth Reports, which have recently included such topics as obesogenic environments, green belt release and biodiversity net gain.
    • Assist with quality assurance tasks on both Compass and DCP. For Compass this would be identifying new codes, deleting old codes, amending existing codes to make them adhere to current policy and legislation. These tasks involve identifying historic appeals which have these codes and reindexing the database to ensure new and old cases are tagged the same. For DCP it may be identifying sections which are no longer applicable and restructuring the manual accordingly.
