Our Group Data function at a glance

As an ambitious and growing specialist global insurer, Hiscox has been investing in creating modern data and analytics capabilities in recent years.

We are at the very beginning of an exciting journey to set up our Group Data Function to implement our Data Strategy and turn our Data and Analytics capabilities into true growth enablers. One of the key parts of our Group Data Function is the Group Functions Data Hub with responsibility to deliver all data and analytics services to the Business Functions including Group Underwriting, Group Claims, Group Marketing and others.

Our Data Strategy is based on 7 principles

  • Distributed data ownership, domain-aligned architecture to maximise the benefits of distributed ownership, create consistency, share best practices and skills
  • Data as a product to make our data Discoverable, Interoperable, Accessible, Understandable and Valuable
  • Democratise Data & Analytics to put the power of our data and analytics in the hands of our people without unnecessary bottlenecks or gatekeepers.
  • Innovate While Building the Foundations
  • Instill Controlled Autonomy to achieve appropriate level of commonality in definitions, processes and technologies while enabling BU data teams to deliver their plans
  • Promote Agility; design solutions that are flexible to change, can be built in increments with only a fraction of the requirements known, and with a high degree of automation
  • Grow, Attract and Retain Talent

As a Data Intern you can expect to:

  • Make a real contribution to the team you’re in, working on challenging projects and developing a broader understanding of the wider function
  • Partner with key individuals across the business, building professional relationships and interacting with senior stakeholders from the start
  • Participate in training sessions where you will develop an understanding of our business and the industry we operate in
  • Carry out a group intern research project on a key area of the business, presenting your recommendations to a panel of senior stakeholders at the end of the programme
  • Receive support from the start, beginning with an induction day to welcome you into the business, as well as regular support with your line manager, dedicated ‘buddy’, and check-ins with the Early Careers team to talk through your development and internship experience.

What is needed to excel in this opportunity?

  • Are you organised and meticulous with a systematic thinking style?
  • Do you have good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with a range of people?
  • Do you have the ability to analyse complex issues but also take a pragmatic and solution-orientated approach?
  • Are you able to question the norm and seek ‘a better way’?
  • Do our core values (Courage, Ownership, Human, Connected, Integrity) resonate with you?
  • Do you have the courage to ask questions, challenge the way things are done and put your own ideas forward?

Why Hiscox?

We believe that it is our humanity that sets us apart from other insurers. We take pride in understanding people and their lives at real depth. We look at what makes them different, not what makes them the same.

Our world-class underwriting enables us to be a specialist that properly gets under the skin of the people it protects instead of an insurance generalist who never goes more than skin deep.

When it comes to claims, our reputation for claims handling is second to none. We see the human pain that comes with a claim and we go above and beyond to make things right.

We forge deep and trusted relationships with our broker partners. We speak to our customers like people, not like robots. And we take real care of our staff.

It all adds up to a business that truly sees the people behind the policy: a business with strongly held values and a unique ‘soul’ that makes Hiscox a place to work like no other.
