    Underwriting is about risk analysis and selection, trading, creativity and innovation. Through interacting with clients and transacting business across the UK, our experts look for alternative and innovative ways to write new, profitable business. Our underwriters utilise leading technologies such as digital trading platforms and dynamic pricing models to stay ahead of an evolving market. This is key in facilitating the growth ambitions of Hiscox UK. Collaboration is an integral part of their roles, as our underwriters work cross-function, sharing and gathering insight with teams such as Pricing and Claims. 

    As an Underwriting Intern, you will be placed in either our Renewals or Digital Trading teams:

    Renewals

    Acting as a key player in Hiscox UK’s retail business, our York office Renewals team handle a range of commercial business indemnity policies with premiums ranging from £10,000 to £100,000. Working across our Manchester, Scotland and York branches, the team have a wide accountability, monitoring and supporting the performance of a diverse book of business. The team’s responsibilities are varied, with broker interaction being key, in addition to their technical work to ensure our policies and level of risk align with our strategy and market trends.

    Digital Trading

    Our Digital Trading Underwriting team handle the full life cycle of commercial business indemnity policies through using state-of-the-art e-trading platforms to transact business with brokers. This is an exciting period of growth and development, as this small and dynamic team strive to build their profitable book of business whilst streamlining and improving their digital processes. With a focus on portfolio analytics and cross-team collaboration, they incorporate a technical and forward-thinking approach in their work.

    As an Underwriting Intern you can expect to

    • Combine your analytical ability with your people skills, as you develop an understanding of our underwriting strategy, learning about the different types of risks we insure and under what conditions
    • Gain tangible exposure to broker relations and trading, with the opportunity to attend broker meetings
    • Assist with workflow optimization, liaising with all team members to ensure end-to-end processes are efficient and developed effectively
    • Make a real contribution to the team you’re in, working on challenging projects and liaising with senior stakeholders from the start 
    • Receive on-the-job training as well as structured training sessions as an intern cohort where you will develop an understanding of our business and the industry we operate in.
    • Carry out a group intern research project on a key area of the business, presenting your recommendations to a panel of senior stakeholders at the end of the programme
    • Receive support from the start, beginning with an induction day to welcome you into the business, as well as regular support with your line manager, dedicated ‘buddy’, and check-ins with the Early Careers team to talk through your development and internship experience.

     You can expect to be in the office approximately 3-4 days per week, although you are welcome to come into the office more frequently if you would like.

    Requirements

    • Currently studying for an Undergraduate or Postgraduate degree to be received in 2025 (2:1 minimum predicted) in any degree discipline (UK or international equivalent)
    • Fluent business English, numerate, strong interpersonal skills
    • Permission to work in the UK

    The internship will take place from 1st July - 23rd August 2024.

    The salary for our internship programme is £25,000 per annum.
