Department description
Co-led by Bryony Widdup and Rita Hunter, the Hogan Lovells Sustainable Finance and Investment practice provides best-in-market support to the firm’s financial institutions clients as they navigate this rapidly evolving sector. The practice delivers innovative, efficient and scalable solutions to the challenges facing the sustainable finance economy and is focused on creating strong, strategic partnerships and collaborations to drive change, develop the market and mobilise capital.
The practice has a long history of collaborating with clients on transactions that promote good governance and a positive social and environmental impact, including several market firsts.
The team advises Hogan Lovells financial institutions clients on a spectrum of sustainable finance and investment products including blended finance and alternative structures, social and development bonds, green/blue finance, financial inclusion products, sustainability-linked loans and bonds, green infrastructure transactions and gender lens investing. The team also advises on key pieces of EU and UK ESG regulation, including the SFDR, Taxonomy Regulation, CSRD and FCA rules relating to mandatory TCFD reporting by asset managers and the proposed rules on SDR and investment labels.
The Hogan Lovells Sustainable Finance and Investment practice does more than advise on the law. A key part of the practice’s service is the analysis and development of innovative, efficient and scalable financial solutions to overcome the challenges facing the sustainable finance economy.
Key responsibilities & accountabilities
The paralegal's main duty is to work alongside the Co-Heads of the Sustainable Finance and Investment practice on a wide range of sustainable finance and investment client matters. Key responsibilities include:
- Drafting notes of client advice and research and internal precedents and guidance;
- Client research and contribution to client and sector strategy;
- Researching and reporting on developments in the sustainable financing & investing sector and creating first drafts of articles/thought leadership for internal and/or external use;
- Assisting with queries (including market developments/precedents) from fee earners and working on sustainable finance transactions;
- Supporting the production, development and update of precedent forms
- Managing the precedent documents and ESG terms and conditions database for internal use
- Assisting with the preparation of internal and client-facing training, workshops, webinars, roundtables
- Develop effective working relationships with members of the department and other support and legal departments
- Additional ad hoc duties as and when required

The candidate
Essential
- High level of IT literacy
- MS Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint experience
- Excellent research skills
- The ability to communicate effectively to all levels of staff, including lawyers, PAs and business services, is required. This applies to all forms of communication: telephone; written; and face-to-face.
- Knowledge of finance transactions
Desired
- Prior knowledge and keen interest in ESG and sustainability
Qualifications and training
- Law degree, or equivalent
- LPC or BVC would be beneficial
