The program

The Associate Development Program runs for 12-18 months and has a focus on building core credit skills – you’ll partner with experts in either Relationship Banking and Structured Finance OR Strategic Fund Solutions depending on which pathway you choose to apply for. In both pathways, you will work alongside relationship teams to assess and meet the needs of our clients.

You can expect a significant amount of hands-on activity with the client base that you are supporting, potentially working with clients across a range of different sectors and life stages. Structured training will focus on building skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • HSBC Innovation Banking & Industry orientation – business lines, innovation ecosystem, venture capital and private equity.
  • Financial Analysis.
  • Credit Underwriting & Structuring.
  • Products – Debt, FX, Cash Management.
  • Portfolio Management – monitoring the performance of our existing clients.
  • Systems and processes.

Your work will include conducting due diligence on potential clients, managing loan portfolio risk and supporting loan growth, underwriting new deals, identifying and resolving compliance issues, and providing client support.

Pathway – Relationship Banking & Structured Finance

Aligned with our Technology and Life Science focus, the Relationship Banking & Structured Finance pathway will give you exposure to supporting businesses across a range of life stages and sectors. Our teams cover clients ranging from early-stage VC-backed startups through to large, public corporates. You will get involved in day-to-day client management, conducting due diligence, structuring debt & credit facilities, assisting with portfolio management and more.

Pathway – Strategic Fund Solutions

The London-based Strategic Fund Solutions team manages the Bank’s client relationships with Venture Capital and Private Equity firms in the UK and EMEA. The team is also responsible for structuring debt facilities for prospect funds and management companies. It covers a broad range of transactions and underlying investment thesis – Venture Capital, Buyout, Emerging Markets, Credit, Secondaries, etc. and is a fast-growing part of the bank.

Skills and requirements

  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills. You may have general financial analysis skills and the ability to read and understand financial statements. You can explain complex situations with ease.
  • You love to learn and tend to pick things up quickly.
  • You enjoy a challenge and thinking outside of the box. You don't give up easily and if you don't know the answer, you strive to find it.
  • A demonstrable interest in innovation (tech/life sciences) and investors into innovative sectors.
  • Applicants must have graduated in 2023 or be graduating in 2024.

There will be two intakes: September 2024 and March 2025
