The Core Capabilities team covers a wide range of technical skills with the common purpose of providing science and engineering support of value across the Johnson Matthey businesses. In addition, the team works on developing new techniques and skills to extend our science base. The internships will support a variety of research activities carried out in the group within the electrochemical transformations, materials synthesis, and formulation groups.
There are 4 internship opportunities available within the team, each with a different focus area covering Materials Synthesis, Formulations & Electrochemical Transformation. In the application questions, you should look to detail which internship you feel fits most with your skillset as well as your interests. This position will run from Summer 2023 through to summer 2024
Our JMTC business provides research and technical support for the commercial operations of JM’s business units. In addition, they offer a comprehensive array of advanced characterisation services; provide a company-wide information resource; and conduct fundamental research into new processes and technologies essential to the future growth and success of our company.
Your responsibilities
The placements will consist of a range of laboratory-based activities which will include:
- Maintaining excellent EHS standards and housekeeping at all times
- Keeping an accurate track record of the work carried out by using electronic lab notes
- Interacting with project leaders regularly to define the project needs and to understand their experimental objectives to be able to conduct independent work in the laboratory.
- Making, characterising, and evaluating materials in one of the focus areas (materials synthesis, formulations, or electrochemical transformations)
- Reviewing the technical literature to develop an understanding of the relevant technologies
- Writing monthly reports and making presentations to communicate the results of their work to project team
- Communicating results to other stakeholders across JM
- Contributing ideas and suggestions for improvements to the project
Requirements for the role
- Undertaking or recently completed a chemistry related degree.
- Inorganic/materials chemistry or electrochemistry interest and experience (desirable)
- Lab based synthetic or measurement experience (desirable)
