    We have exciting opportunities for two 12 month Industrial Placements, starting in summer 2024 in the Catalyst Technologies team of Johnson Matthey. You will utilise our state-of-the-art facilities in Stockton on Tees & Billingham, covering a wide range of technical skills with the common purpose of providing scientific support of value across the CT business.

    In addition, you will work on developing techniques and skills to kick-start your future graduate career, supporting a variety of research activities carried out in the group.

    The role

    These placements are ideally suited for candidates who are currently tracking at a 2:1 or 1st level grade and are completing their third year, heading into the fourth year of a Masters in a Chemistry related degree with an industrial placement in the final year.

    Catalyst Technologies (CT) is a market leader in the syngas value chain. It develops and supplies high-value, specialty process technology and catalysts for chemicals and fuels processing to enable our customers to operate efficiently, profitably and sustainably. With CT at the forefront of the transition to sustainable chemicals and fuels, the transition to net zero is creating exciting new opportunities in this sector.

    Your responsibilities:

    • Implements safe systems of work and complies to EHS and quality standards. Generates project safety documentation/risk assessments/COSHH assessments.
    • Executes agreed experimental programs/analysis/customer support tests within tightly defined practice parameters and objectives, with ready access to supervisor.
    • Applies a range of basic scientific techniques to generate data/materials or to complete analytical tests/measurements, identifying and escalating risks and issues.
    • Able to competently apply methods independently across a breadth of techniques.
    • Information and findings accurately recorded (eg ELN/Lab notebooks/reports etc) and communicated to internal colleagues/supervisor through a variety of media whilst taking into account the project objectives.
    • Actively looks to build proficiency in foundational R&D techniques, including data interpretation, while building an understanding of the science involved in CT products and processes, accessing scientific literature where necessary.
    • Develops an understanding and working knowledge of a broad range of analytical techniques/methods.
    • Identifies opportunities for improvement to work procedures and experimental set up/design.
    • May operate as the responsible person for a small lab, piece of test equipment or analytical instrumentation.
    • May plan own work under guidance to a generally defined project plan, may alter the sequence of activities, but broadly restricted by prescribed processes with a 1 month horizon.
    • To carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

    Requirements for the role

    • Completing third year within a Chemistry related degree, heading towards Masters.
    • Experience of working in a laboratory
