    What you will do

    As a Graduate Optical Engineer you will undergo a focused Learning & Development programme that will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to research, design, development and manufacturing phases within the field of Electro-Optic (EO) Sensors.

    As the successful candidate, you will be involved in the development and delivery of complex EO products used by Defence and Commercial Industries, including the latest generation of Missile Seekers, Thermal Imaging Cameras, C-UAS and wide scope of Laser based systems.

    Your development will include ‘classical optics’ for Infra-Red (IR) Sensors, which includes the design, test and appreciation of lens element and optical system manufacture; progressing to more advanced optical design aspects i.e. free form and diffractive lenses, Computational Imaging, etc.

    As part of a wider UK Optical Engineering Team you will receive on-going support from your peers; you will be encouraged to push personal and technology limits in the pursuit of innovation within EO Sensor Systems, utilising theoretical and practical methods.

    The role will offer you the opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, which contains some of Industries leading EO Systems talent.

    This role will also offer opportunities to travel to support Project activities, Customer/Sub-contractor engagement and self-development. In additional to technical skills you will also develop soft skills related to:

    • Team work
    • Work package Management (Quality, Schedule and Cost)
    • Time Management and Prioritisation
    • Engineering function continuous improvement

    As a Graduate Optical Engineer, you will be a key contributor to system architecture definition, specifying and developing lens designs, conducting analyses and performance simulations, supporting the integration and test of systems and working closely with manufacturing colleagues and suppliers to ensure the delivery of high quality products.

    What we are looking for

    Mandatory

    Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business, which includes having a minimum of 5 years permanent residency in the UK, but may need to be to a higher level for this particular role due to the nature of the projects and or programmes that the role will be supporting.

    This role also requires access to ITAR controlled documentation.

    Qualifications

    All of our roles require (a) a minimum of an upper Second class Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as a MSc or PhD. In all cases the subject should be in Physics or Optoelectronics (Essential)

    Highly Desirable

    • B.Sc. in Physics or Optoelectronics (Essential)
    • M.Sc. or PhD in an applied optics field (Desirable)
    • Experience/knowledge in imaging optics and standard test equipment i.e. interferometry/spectrophotometry/MTF measurements

    The role requires good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. Successful candidates will demonstrate an enthusiasm to develop new skills and be willing to grasp opportunities to excel.
