Use your love of innovation and learning to build products and services for millions of people across the UK.

We're creating technology for millions

Robotics, machine learning, cloud technology. That’s a small example of the innovation we invest in – up to £2bn worth of it – every year. And it’s no wonder. We’re the UK’s largest digital bank, serving over 26 million customers, with over 17 million of them being active online users. And due to our commitment to technological transformation, in 2020 we were named Euromoney’s Best Digital Bank in Western Europe. We take care to ensure we’re meeting our customers’ changing needs effectively, and that’s where our software engineers come in. Their role is to help us in our mission to be the bank of the future, by developing software and services that improve people’s banking experiences.

Is our software engineering graduate scheme for you?

If you love playing with code and are passionate about technology, Software Engineering could be for you.

Our software engineers are collaborative by nature. Working within a specific business area, they’re transforming banking to meet our customers’ needs and help us be the best bank for Britain. As well as being strong communicators and great team players, they’re also keen to always keep learning.

If that sounds exciting and you want to help build the bank of the future, this scheme is for you.

What you'll learn on the software engineering graduate scheme?

Over two years, you’ll experience the variety of software engineering roles and opportunities we offer.

You’ll join a different team on each of your three rotations and experience a diverse range of projects. You could work on large-scale projects, writing code in different languages and creating DevOps pipelines, building new features for our mobile app or creating a robot that automatically restores our core banking services. Whatever the task, you’ll learn about using agile and waterfall delivery styles, and see first-hand how your contribution in our collaborative teams can make a difference.

You’ll be supported by your Software Engineering Lead and you’ll get the chance to take up extra learning – such as cloud training and certification courses – too. Plus, there’ll be opportunities to network with other engineers at our hackathons, sponsored by our partners such as Google, Microsoft and IBM.

As well as kickstarting your career, this graduate scheme is designed to help you grow in an area you really enjoy.

The work you could be doing

  • Developing your coding skills using languages like Javascript, C# and Python
  • Helping to automate processes that save colleagues and customers time
  • Testing new software to make sure it provides a seamless customer experience
  • Stress-testing mortgage journeys and finding ways to improve them for customers
  • Helping build customer service infrastructure that’s used in branch
  • Focusing on quality at all stages of delivery to ensure the best possible solutions for our customers’ needs

What you need to apply

A 2:2 degree or above in any discipline from any university, and PhD and Masters students are also welcome.

Due to the technical nature of this graduate scheme, you’ll need a good understanding of at least one modern programming language or framework, a love of technology and a strong will to learn.

Locations

Our graduate schemes are rotational, and our Software Engineering roles are based in various UK cities. You’ll mainly work across our Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Manchester and West Yorkshire hubs.
