If you’ve curious about how technology empowers investment management, Man Group early career roles give you the chance to use the latest technologies to help ensure we stay at the forefront of this evolving industry.
We continually invest in talent, technology and research as we strive to deliver the best results to our clients, managing $151bn (as of March 31 2022) using long only, alternative and private market products.
Man Group is committed to minimising our operational environmental impact and to being consistent and transparent about the progress we are making. We encourage a more diverse range of talent to apply for positions at Man Group and believe it is our responsibility to address factors which lead to a lack of diversity in our workforce.
Purpose of the Role
Our people driven team builds, enhances and maintains Man Group’s trading platform. This includes a wide and varied range of business functions such as portfolio management, order management, sales and marketing, accounting, operations, compliance, regulatory reporting and risk.
Working in our development team, this role will allow you to participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle and BAU (business as usual) support.
BAU work includes maintaining the existing tech stack, 3rd line support and supporting our business colleagues with queries, small enhancements, bug and data fixes aiming for continuous improvement of production components.
Software development consists of longer term, more far-reaching changes that are a mixture of extending existing systems, incorporating new technologies and building out our strategic technology platform.
Specific Responsibilities
- Involved in all aspects of the software development from requirements gathering through to development, testing and co-ordinating deployment to production
- Participate in the planning, design and delivery of projects
- Participate in code reviews and knowledge sharing with your peers
- Appreciate how stakeholder interaction is integral to successful delivery
- Encourage the adoption of best practises and help improve business knowledge and understanding in the team
Requirement
- Enthusiastic and eager to learn
- Problem solving mindset
- Ability to work well with others within a team
- Keen interest in and aptitude for technology
- Some coding experience, preferably in SQL, C# and .NET, though we also use React and Kafka amongst other technologies
What can you expect in your first few months?
We have an established onboarding programme for new engineers, where you will spend 3-6 months learning about how our platform works and the tools and technologies that we use day to day.
During this time you will focus on a series of themed smaller development tasks, delivering change to our end users and learning about aspects of their business function. You will also shadow a support cycle, learning to unpick problems that have been observed and participating in fixes where possible.
As your knowledge and confidence grows you will begin to work with others in the team on our extensive book of project work.
Once through the onboarding programme, most engineers work on 3-5 projects in their first year with different members of the wider team, and this pattern continues so that over time a broad base of platform knowledge is acquired, and you become able to operate with increased independence and potentially specialise in certain areas of the platform.
Where will I be working?
We currently operate a successful hybrid working model, with members of the team attending the office for a minimum of two days per week, more if desired. We always encourage a high rate of in person attendance to begin with in order to forge strong relationships with your peers and allow the best opportunity to learn from others in the team.
What about training?
Investment Management Technology offers many areas for growth on a technical, business/industry knowledge and soft skills basis. We provide introductions to the team and department, formal training courses in certain key technologies where needed, a wide library of self-study material from online content providers, but most importantly an engaged and knowledgeable team to grow with.
Our team structure is such that by design you will not usually work with your line manager on projects – this relationship is not about project delivery, but to help with career development and personal growth.
Man Group is also fortunate to have a Talent team who offer many opportunities to develop non-technical skills such as presenting, business writing and managing your career and often host illuminating interviews with people from across the firm to give insight into how their careers have been built.
Our Application Process
You will be taken to the Man careers website, where you can submit your application. Once the team has reviewed this, we will follow this process:
- Video call introduction to discuss the role and your experiences, motivations and aspirations at a high level, 20-30 minutes.
- A ‘do anywhere’ c# coding assignment appropriate to your level of experience, delivered via GitHub. The exercise can usually be completed in a few hours, though you can go to town showing off your skills if you like. We ask that this is completed within a week.
- A review of the solution provided with the engineers who reviewed your solution, both of whom will be a few years into their careers, talking in more detail about how and why you made certain decisions in your solution. This stage will also cover some SQL if you have such experience. Around an hour.
- Final round with two senior members of the team, 30 – 40 minutes.
Depending on your proximity to one of our offices, we do prefer to do at least one of, and ideally both of round 3 and 4 in person.
