This is an 8 week paid internship providing penultimate year students with an accelerated foundation to their career. It’s a challenging and rewarding programme where you will be working on real projects with real clients. During the internship, you will receive an introduction to consulting – your development and growth is important to us here at Mercer.

We have positions available in several practice areas – Actuarial, Governance & Pensions Management, Defined Contribution Pension and Investments.

What can you expect?

Actuarial Intern

For many companies, their pensions arrangements can represent a significant financial risk. Our Actuarial team provides advice to defined benefit pension scheme trustees and corporate sponsors in areas such as scheme funding, individual benefits, risk management and more.

Our key aim as trusted advisors is to communicate complex analysis in simple terms for our clients to make well-informed decisions on their pensions issues. Your role in the team will be to support analysts and consultants with this work, while building up your own knowledge about financial markets and the pensions industry.

Governance & Pensions Management Intern

Our Governance and Pensions Management team works with trustee clients to ensure their pension schemes are run effectively. Your role in the team will be to support consultants and analysts to deliver an exemplary service to clients, liaising with internal and external stakeholders as required.

You will have the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of client delivery, including trustee meetings, project management, relationship building and more. You will gain an insight into the day-to-day running of a pension scheme whilst developing your communication and organisational skills.

Defined Contribution Pension Intern

Our Defined Contribution team provides specialist advice to pension clients in areas such as designing new investment strategies and monitoring the performance of that strategy, helping clients navigate the complex governance requirements, in particular those faced by trustee boards, as well as helping companies design pension plans that deliver great outcomes for their employees.

This is an opportunity to support and learn from the largest group of DC experts in the UK and in a dynamic and growing area of pension provision.

Investments Intern

Our Investments business provides tools, advice and delegated solutions to the trustees of pension schemes as well as other assets owners such as endowments, foundations, family offices and insurers. We undertake projects ranging from investment strategy reviews, performance and risk monitoring, asset transition, portfolio management and sustainable investing. The team enjoys an industry leading position and has been at the cutting edge of innovation in rolling out new tools and services, most recently in the area of responsible investment.

Your role in the team will be to support analysts and consultants, while building up your own knowledge about the industry.

What you need to have

  • You should be a penultimate year student and expected to achieve a minimum 2:1 degree classification.
  • Actuarial internships: If your degree discipline is not mathematics-based, you should have a minimum of a grade A mathematics at A level (or equivalent).
  • Right to Work in the UK (we are unable to provide Visa sponsorship for this role).
