About the role
An exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about playing a part in tackling the climate emergency, to join our Sustainability team as a Graduate Building Performance Consultant. The role will be based in our Bristol office and will require working collaboratively with team-members in both the London and Bristol offices, with some travel between the two.
Our sustainability team is a close-knit team spread across our five offices. We lead on sustainability strategies and assessment, building performance, embodied carbon analysis and wellbeing services within the practice. Our Sustainability consultants help our clients develop and then champion a sustainability brief within the whole project team. The sustainability team is embedded in an engineering group to encourage idea sharing and information dissemination and we also act as a hub for sustainability knowledge working with all engineers across the practice.
Building performance is how a building works in practice. It encompasses functional issues such as how easy the building is to use, maintain, the quality and comfort of the internal environment – air, heat and light – and energy efficiency and carbon emissions. The work our building performance consultants have done has been rewarded by achieving BSRIA Soft Landings Practitioner of the Year.
We believe that being an effective building performance specialist requires experience of how buildings are designed, built and operated, and a good understanding of building services. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be trained and gain experience in:
- Setting energy and carbon key performance indicators (KPIs) for a project in the context of achieving Net Zero Carbon
- Operational energy modelling - using both dynamic simulation modelling and first principals.
- Review of strategic and outline designs for the achievement of high building performance
- Design of energy metering and monitoring systems to measure energy consumption
- Design of building control systems
- Overseeing how buildings are commissioned
- Specification of Automatic monitoring and targeting (AMT) systems
- Net Zero Carbon assessments
The role will involve working across a broad range of projects in different sectors and at various different stages of the project, from early-stage work right at the inception of the project, through to carrying our Post Occupancy Evaluations (POE) by engaging with the building occupants after the building has been completed.
A key part of this role will be in helping the practice to achieve our delivery of net zero carbon on all our projects. This will involve carrying out POE reviews and working with a team of engineers and consultants internally to deliver these ambitions. This presents a fantastic opportunity to make a difference on how our built environment performs and influence and promote best practice in the industry.
We would also engage the successful candidate on some broader sustainability consultancy, taking into consideration their interests and aspirations, to give them a better-rounded training.
About you
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic graduate who learns quickly and who enjoys the challenge of new experiences. You should have a good degree in engineering, architecture or physical science (minimum 2:1 or equivalent).
The role requires very good communication skills and sound technical ability and will require a flexible and organised approach in order to work across a very broad range of projects.
Some experience is the built environment or a masters degree in a relevant degree would be beneficial but is not essential.
