McLaren Racing’s entry in Extreme E and Formula E aims to accelerate McLaren Racing’s sustainability journey and reach a new, more diverse global audience and workforce. Based on the unique Bicester Heritage site, the Extreme E and Formula E teams combined are known as NEOM McLaren Electric Racing.
Purpose of the role
To assist in the operation, maintenance and development of the teams’ Driver-In-The-Loop (DIL) simulators.
Role dimensions
- The Simulator team sits within the Vehicle Dynamics group.
- The role will involve significant collaboration with the rest of the Vehicle Dynamics group, particularly regarding simulation and tyre modelling, as well as collaboration with the Race Engineering and Systems Engineering groups.
- The role will also involve interaction with internal and external organisations who may be involved in the operation and development of the simulators.
- The role will involve working across both of the Teams’ locations: in Bicester and in Woking.
Principal accountabilities
- Preparation of the DIL simulators to support the test programme.
- Operation of the DIL simulators during testing.
- Contribute to the maintenance and development of the simulator software code base.
- Contribute to simulator development projects (hardware and software)
- Completion of ad-hoc vehicle dynamics projects may be required from time to time.
Progression
Progression towards the role of Senior Associate, Simulator Engineer will take place during the normal working practice of the role of Graduate, Simulator Engineer.
The main items of progression will include
- Demonstrating substantial knowledge in the field of simulation and simulators.
- Contributing to the goals of the team, by contributing to or leading smaller projects/workstreams that directly impact the goals, in multiple areas.
Job requirements
Essential
- Outstanding academic background with a BEng in Mechanical or Control Engineering.
- Familiarity with the one or more of the following coding languages: C, C++, Python.
- Experience in using and developing models in Matlab / Simulink
- Ability to work to deadlines on a variety of timescales and balance your workload between different projects.
- Ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical information.
- Strong analytical skills underpinned by a data driven approach.
Desirable
- Practical experience of building and/or maintaining electrical systems and/or circuit design.
- Practical experience of computer systems and networking.
- Practical experience of the maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and understanding of racing car vehicle dynamics.
- Previous exposure to the track/race team environment.
