    The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2023 until July 2024.

    We are looking for an exceptional Industrial Placement to make a difference to our planet.

    Our Industrial Placement will work in a hybrid pattern with one day a week at our Exeter HQ. Please note that any travel costs to the primary workplace location will be borne by the placement, with a salary of £20,048 in line with planned increase to National Living Wage from April 2023, plus amazing benefits.

    Job purpose

    This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year In Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placement all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.

    IMPROVER is a world class brand new post-processing system that introduces dramatically richer data and forecast accuracy improvements to Met Office downstream systems for public use. The next challenge for IMPROVER and the Met Office is to take advantage of the new era of data science and machine learning to research and implement advances in IMPROVER forecast quality to serve the public.

    The placement will assist in setting up machine learning and data science infrastructure for IMPROVER, collaborating with future cloud projects (Prism), Microsoft, and the Met Office Informatics Lab to make use of newer technology where appropriate and to drive future requirements for Science platforms. As part of this they will do their own data science and exploration guided by IMPROVER scientists.

    As our Post-Processing Machine Learning - Industrial Placement 2023, the key duties are:

    • With experienced staff, investigate options for machine learning software infrastructure for the IMPROVER system
    • Dedicate some time to your own professional development within software engineering and data science
    • Take on small projects, including within data science and machine learning, to enhance operational weather forecast systems

    Essential qualifications, skills and abilities

    • Studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant numeracy, science (mathematics or a physical science) and/or IT element such as Computer Science or Data Science (We're experts by nature)
    • Experience of Python in a data science or data analysis environment (We're experts by nature)
    • A willingness to learn and apply good software engineering discipline (We keep evolving)
    • A keen interest in data science and how it can help the Met Office (We're a force for good)
    • Effective communication skills across a variety of methods (spoken, written, 1 on 1, etc) (We're better together)
    • Evidence of working and collaborating well as a member of a team, using own initiative when required (We're better together)
