It begins with Business Enablers
At GCHQ, we unlock the complex world of data and communications to keep the UK and its citizens safe, both in the real world and online. Working closely with our British Intelligence partners in MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from threats including serious organised crime, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. A role in GCHQ means you’ll have varied and fascinating work in a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.
As a Business Enabler, we’ll give you the chance to work in a range of different areas, building your experience, knowledge and relationships while you’re providing mission-critical support. Your daily activities could include providing executive support to senior managers; helping to set up contracts with external suppliers; monitoring budgets or producing reports that help track delivery of key projects.
But this isn’t a development programme. This is a role that will allow you to explore exciting new job prospects, whatever stage your career is at. Whether you’ve recently left school, just graduated or you’re looking for a career change, you’ll do vital work at the heart of GCHQ as you try new things and find out what you enjoy. All the while, you’ll be helping to ensure the wider intelligence community has what it needs to protect national security.
Typically, your first role will last two to three years, and you could find yourself working in Finance, Legal, HR, Compliance, Recruitment, Data Management, or elsewhere. Wherever you’re based, you’ll bring your people skills and a keen eye for detail to a team that really values your work. At the end of your first role, you’ll be able to choose where you go next, and you’ll be able to apply for a range of roles within GCHQ.
There’s no one ‘type’ of person we’re looking for, and our existing Business Enablers come from all kinds of backgrounds. To join us at GCHQ, you’ll need five GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent), two being Math’s and English.
We’ll give you an induction and your own mentor to give you the best start, as well as ongoing training to help you thrive. You’ll also benefit from 25 days’ holiday on top of Bank Holidays, and an excellent pension scheme. A season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme and flexible working are all on offer – along with full access to our onsite gym.
As an inclusive employer, we value difference and strive to create a working environment that’s welcoming and encouraging – where everyone can be themselves. We’re proud to have a number of affinity groups, including ethnic minority and gender equality networks, mental health, neurodiversity and disability groups, faith/no faith and LGBTQ+ communities, and more. Bottom line? It’s a fulfilling role. And as you support others, you’ll be part of a friendly team who’ll look after you too.

At GCHQ diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Find out more about our culture, working environment and diversity on our website.
