Location: London-based for the first three years. Thereafter location will vary depending on role and career path (overseas opportunities available).

We’re MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Working across the globe and in close partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we help the Government to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. A role in MI6 will see you providing vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

Always asking questions, solving problems, and building connections? If that sounds like you, becoming an Intelligence Officer could be your next natural step.

At MI6, our Intelligence Officers (IOs) work around the globe to gather, deliver and use secret intelligence to protect the UK and its interests overseas. It’s a complex role which covers four main areas:

    • Targeters, who turn data into real-life intelligence operations
    • Case Officers, who manage relationships with agents (the ones providing intelligence)
    • Reporting Officers, who analyse and validate intelligence before briefing government officials
    • Operational Managers, who plan and manage the collection of intelligence

This is critical work that keeps the UK safe. Depending on the business area you’re in, you might meet a contact for a chat in a café, discuss intelligence with a customer in Whitehall, or gather intelligence online at our offices using a range of data tools to make sense of complex information. For the most part, your work will look like any other office role – and like any other role, you’ll usually be contactable if your family and friends need you.

We know no one starts out as a fully-trained IO, and we don’t expect that from you either. What we’re looking for is potential. That’s why you’ll begin your career with our three-year Intelligence Officer Training Pathway, a mix of classroom and hands-on training. You’ll have your own workload, but plenty of support from mentors and colleagues to help you succeed.

    Register your interest now.

The application window for the IO role will open on Friday 7th March in the afternoon. In the meantime, we encourage all those from:

    • Black, Asian or minority ethnic background
    • women (of any background)
    • those from a socially or economically disadvantaged background

to register their interest for this upcoming opportunity. Please note that we’re confining registrations of interest to the above groups only, due to their current under-representation in our workforce.

As part of the registration of interest, you’ll be invited to an online session taking place on Thursday 6th March to learn more about the role.

A registration of interest does not constitute a job application, nor will such registration have any bearing upon the recruitment process itself.

Any individuals who register their interest and who decide subsequently to apply for the IO role will need to complete an application form once the window for applications has opened.

Once the application window has opened, we welcome applications from all candidates, regardless of their ethnic background, gender, disability and/or any other characteristic(s). All applications will be assessed solely on merit.
