Working pattern: We support full time, part time, compressed hours, and flexible hours.  We’re committed to offering remote working across our organisation, however, our ability to do this is dependent on role requirements and business needs.

Salary: £32,092 (rising to £35,092 after successfully completing a 6-month probationary period)

We’re GCHQ and we work to protect Britain’s people, interests, and businesses from threats including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. As a Language Analyst, specialising in French or Spanish, you’ll deliver impact at the heart of national security: within a supportive, inclusive environment that allows everyone to thrive.

Day-to-day, you’ll use your linguistic expertise to translate and extract key information from a range of material, some of which may be very technical or specialised in nature. But this role goes beyond translation. You’ll also develop analytical skills and an understanding of communication technologies to support key aspects of our work. And you’ll use your understanding of language and cultural nuances to analyse, draw conclusions, and write reports that will inform live operations.

To excel in this position, a very good understanding (equivalent to CEFR C1 level) of written and spoken French or Spanish is required, along with a natural curiosity and desire to find answers. And if you're proficient in other modern foreign languages, we’d like to hear about those as well.

As the government’s leading employer of linguists, at GCHQ you’ll be joining a vibrant network of hundreds of language specialists; all of whom will not only share your love of language but also provide you with invaluable support as you develop your skills. Along with this, you’ll receive a competitive salary and great benefits, as well as plenty of dedicated support that will help you build a rewarding career.

Ours is a friendly, open environment where we encourage people to bring their whole selves to work. As well as several social clubs and societies that help colleagues meet new people, we have a wide range of support networks promoting awareness of gender equality, LGBTQ+, Race, faith, neurodivergence, disability, and more – all to ensure you feel supported, valued, and included. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, in particular those from groups that are currently under-represented in our workforce, such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
