MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people, and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ, to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses, and other organisations on how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

The role of a Language Specialist goes beyond mere words. You’ll bring your expertise in Chechen, Tajik or Somali to our diverse language community, playing a crucial role in identifying vital intelligence. Your linguistic and cultural insights will provide essential context, enrich reports, and advance investigations. In short, you’ll help unlock the bigger picture.

You’ll work with a variety of materials in your chosen language, analysing and sharing insights with investigators and operational teams. You might use our specialist language tools, create briefings, or leverage your culture knowledge to support investigative teams. This role offers real scope and you’ll be surrounded by colleagues who share your passion for language. While autonomy is expected, teamwork is crucial to our success. You’ll collaborate on projects and contribute collectively to operations.

To join, you’ll need to have proficiency in Chechen, Tajik or Somali language to at least C1 level or equivalent in active language skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing. You might be a graduate with a love of language, or someone looking to change careers. You’ll be inquisitive, curious, and collaborative, and have knowledge of the culture, religions, and regions where your language is spoken.

When you join, you’ll receive a thorough induction on our tools, methods, and ways of working. Additionally, you’ll be assigned a ‘buddy’ and a mentor to help you settle in. Plus, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to further your skills and build your career.

As part of the role, you’ll be offered a maintenance language class to ensure your language skills and knowledge stay current. We also offer a wide range of internal training courses, as well as support to acquire funded language-related qualifications.

Ours is a welcoming, supportive workplace committed to helping you fulfil your potential. Plus, you’ll discover a number of friendly sports, social and interest clubs as well as a range of affinity networks championing equity, diversity and inclusion across our organisation. You can find out more about life at MI5 on our website.
