Discover a procurement career as unique as our requirements

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you’ll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

As a Trainee Procurement Officer, you’ll join one of our friendly Commercial teams working to manage buying demand for the UK’s Intelligence Services. From contract implementation and management through to partnership negotiation and budget control, you’ll get plenty of training and support as you contribute to a valued service that teams across MI5, MI6 and GCHQ rely on.

You could be working with our Customer Facing Teams, managing relationships, developing commercial solutions and agreeing the future pipeline and prioritisation of the workbook.  Or you might be supporting Commercial Delivery across Technology, Estates, People and Professional Services, and the Supply Chain Security Team. We also have roles in Commercial Operations, with responsibility for managing low value procurements, Policy, Audit, Management Information, Workforce Planning and Financial Resourcing.

With exposure to our commercial systems and processes, you’ll build your skills and knowledge while providing a professional service to internal and external customers. And you’ll do it as part of a friendly, and supportive team working collaboratively across the agencies. You’ll bring your experience working in customer service to the role and know how important it is to provide progress updates, nurture relationships with suppliers and share your knowledge. As your knowledge and experience grows, you’ll help improve commercial systems and processes, and ensure we continue working in line with procurement best practice.

You don’t need a qualification in procurement to join, and there’s no minimum qualification requirement. We’ll provide plenty of support and training, including encouragement towards gaining a professional commercial qualification such as the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) Level 4 (or a business equivalent). We will work with you to build your own progression plan, from mentorship with an assigned partner to a structured development path within your first three years in the role. You’ll bring a genuine interest in commercial/procurement and/or supply chain management and combine your customer focus with a drive to develop a career in this field.

Ours is a welcoming, inclusive and supportive workplace committed to helping you fulfil your potential. You’ll receive plenty of support, from a tailored progression plan and mentorship with an assigned partner, to access to a number of friendly sports, social, and interest clubs as well as a thriving number of affinity networks championing equity, diversity and inclusion across our organisations. We’re proud to have achieved ‘Leader’ status as a Disability Confident employer. And in this role, we offer a range of flexible working options including flexi-time, part-time, full-time, job share and compressed hours, allowing you to enjoy a positive work-life balance without compromising on what matters to you.

This is an exciting time to join a diverse and welcoming function operating at the heart of national security.

At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
