The Graduate Design and Safety Case Development Engineer post is an exciting opportunity to develop highly coveted skills in the Defence Nuclear sector whilst playing a key role in shaping the future of Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde as it undergoes significant investment in support of current operations and in preparation for the future nuclear submarine and weapons programmes.
HMNB Clyde is home to the United Kingdom’s Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Cdo Royal Marines. It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites. HMNB Clyde’s primary purpose is to provide engineering and logistical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD). This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
After a qualifying period attracts a recruitment and retention allowance (RRA) of £4,000 per annum. In order to qualify the successful candidate must demonstrate that they have the required experience and knowledge to carry out the role to the required standard.
Job description
We are looking to recruit Graduate Engineers and Develop their practical experience in Electrical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering and Safety Case production for the Structures Systems and Components in support of the Intelligent Customer capability of the HMNB Clyde Design Authority (DA).
The Clyde Design Authority undertakes a vital role in ensuring that key defence nuclear infrastructure that interfaces with nuclear powered warships and nuclear weapon systems is safe and fit for purpose.
This role will be suited to Graduate Engineers seeking to develop experience in a High Hazard low probability environment in the derivation of Risk tolerance through the Production, Justification & Substantiation of Safety Case and Design arguments and application.
Responsibilities
Working from HMNB Clyde, you will be responsible, with the support of a Design Authority Principal Engineer, for:
- Acting as the Intelligent Customer for Contractor delivery of Nuclear Reactor, and Nuclear Weapon design and safety cases, ensuring these are consistent with current good practice and regulatory requirements.
- Supporting the delivery of the HMNB Clyde Periodic Review of Safety programme and subsequent implementation of shortfalls.
- Supporting the development and assessment of HMNB Clyde Policy and Standards, ensuring they are consistent with regulatory requirements and expectations.
- Technical excellence in the specification, assessment and approval of design packages for infrastructure.
- Specification of reliability and operational constraints for infrastructure.
- Assessment of work control procedures for maintenance of infrastructure.
- Assessment of infrastructure design, material state, qualification and ageing mechanisms to permit the continued operation of facilities and utilities.
- Discharge and display a robust safety and security culture.
- Ensure outputs of safety related contracts meet the contract requirements and appropriate safety requirements by acting as an intelligent customer.
To be considered for this role you will have
- Minimum of Engineering Council degree in an engineering/science subject (or equivalent qualification or experience).
- Preferably with knowledge/experience of some of the following: Engineering/Safety systems; Electrical Power Distribution, Pump systems, cranes, lifting equipment, heating ventilation & air conditioning (HVAC), pressure systems, Diesel Generators, explosives/ordnance, structural or civil engineering in an industrial environment.
- In addition experience of Fault modelling techniques ie, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) would be advantageous.
- Experience of working within the nuclear industry or any other high hazard industry, although this is not considered essential.
- Ability to provide practical, creative and cost-effective solutions for safety campaigns, design changes / modifications of plant and supporting Infrastructure.
- A good understanding of British and international design standards.
- Awareness of Regulation and its application in context of Risk Management.
- A track record of making intelligent evidence based decisions using various sources of data.
- Good skills in verbal and written communication.
- The ability to effectively manage and prioritise your own workload.

The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six month probation period.
