Your day-to-day duties would include
- Structural analysis and design of buildings including substructure, superstructure, primary and secondary elements in all major materials including steel, reinforced concrete, timber and masonry
- Undertake engineering design, including concept, scheme, and detailed design
- Environmental impact assessment of civil and structural engineering designs, including embodied carbon
- Responsible for liaising with external stakeholders and other members of the design team to produce well-co-ordinated designs which fully meet the client’s brief.
- Provide a proactive and collaborative approach to clients to ensure the best solution is offered to meet their needs
- Delivery of your own project work to agreed budgets and programmes
- Produce structural calculations using Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Robot, Staad Pro, Excel and other industry software packages in accordance with Eurocodes and British Standards
- Produce hand calculations, technical reports, and sketches
- Mark-up design solutions and details for technicians to produce Revit models and technical drawing deliverables. Oversee drawing production by others and check outputs
- Represent Mott MacDonald at internal and external design team meetings
- Visit site to complete structural surveys and inspections
- Ensure more senior staff are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions
As the successful candidate you would be working a professional chartered qualification, supported by our training scheme.
Candidate Specification
For this role you will need to align with the majority (although not necessarily all) of the following criteria:
- Degree Qualified in a suitable engineering subject such as Civil or Structural Engineering
- Experience of using analytical/design software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Robot, Etabs, Staad, Tedds and other design spreadsheets or tools
- Experience of specification preparation including the use of NBS Create or Chorus
- Experience designing building structures to Eurocodes
- Experience producing technical reports and specifications
- Experience producing sketches and mark-ups to facilitate drawing production by technicians
- Experience working with other consultants as part of a multi-disciplinary teams including architects and MEP engineers
Other desirable criteria
- Familiar with model authoring tools such as AutoCad, Revit, Civils 3D.
- Familiar with information storage, management and collaboration tools such as SharePoint, Projectwise, 4P Viewpoint, ASite, Aconex, BIM 360, Navisworks, Revizto, Dalux etc.
- Interest and experience of software packages and methods commonly used in digital delivery such as Revit, SketchUp, Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, Python etc.
- Experience in parametric and generative design would be a benefit
- Experience of undertaking building or infrastructure condition, defect or deterioration surveys and inspections and the preparations of reports
- Security clearance

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and highly-motivated graduate structural engineer to join a large consultancy in a well-established yet still developing team, with the responsibility for technically delivering exciting buildings projects.
You would be part of our Northern Division as part of a 45 strong structural team who are located across Manchester, Altrincham, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, and Sheffield.
We currently have projects in the health, education, transport, commercial, high-rise residential, defence, sports and water sub-sectors ranging up to £500m in value, including the new terminal building at Leeds Bradford Airport, the new Anfield Road stand expansion for Liverpool Football Club the Albion Square mixed-use development in Hull and a major new expansion of Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax to name just a few.
