Established in 1947, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is a membership organisation and the only national body representing the interests of local (parish and town) councils. NALC works in partnership with county associations to support, promote and improve local councils.
NALC provide a national voice for local councils across England. We campaign on their behalf, raise awareness of their work and provide them with various services to support their needs.
About the Role
The communications team is responsible for the messaging, branding and identity of NALC. The team leads on the website, social media, e-marketing, branding, design, print, publications and press.

About You
We are looking for a talented, motivated and enthusiastic communications officer. The communications officer will join the policy and communications team and work at the heart of our communications and campaign activity.
You support the digital communications manager by working across internal, external and stakeholder communications and delivering NALC's strategic aims.
Day-to-day, you will work on various communications activities such as website management and development, social media, e-marketing, branding, copywriting, and campaign and event support. You will be open to learning new skills and developing existing ones.
Responsibilities
- Help the policy and communications team in delivering its priorities and objectives
- Support the digital communications manager in undertaking day-to-day communications activities
- Update and help manage the NALC website
- To participate in the digital transformation and website development project
- Maintain, update and create media databases, and assist with media enquiries at national and local levels
- Create, schedule and plan social media content
- Content generation for all forms of media such as digital and print
- Lead on communications activity for NALC's Star Council Awards
- Copywriting for a wide range of audiences, proofreading and editing to align copy to house style
- Support NALC campaigns through communications activity
- Assist with the delivery of NALC events (virtual and in-person)
- Help to brand up publications, event slides, comms packs and other assets
- Gather analytics and produce reports on NALC's website and social media channels
- Undertake any other tasks requested by the digital communications manager
- Support NALC's management team in delivering its strategic plan and goals
- Model NALC's values and work by following health and safety, equal opportunities and environmental policies
- Participate in corporate and continuous professional development
Requirements
- Educated to at least university degree level (or can demonstrate ability at that level)
- Knowledge and interest in local government and issues that affect local communities
- Excellent understanding of social media channels and confidence in leading an online presence
- Outstanding written skills and ability to write for different audiences
- Sound knowledge of visual design principles
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to engage and build positive relations with stakeholders and suppliers
- Open to developing skills and learning new skills ones
- Exemplary attention to detail
- Experience working in a collaborative team environment
- A willingness for new approaches to drive projects and activities
- Good time management and organisation skills to deliver to tight deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365
