We can only drive real benefit for the energy industry by expanding beyond electricity to encompass whole energy system thinking, and this will start with taking on gas planning roles, while developing capability to consider network planning holistically to allow for other energy vectors such as hydrogen and CCUS to be considered in the future once these are further developed. These roles as Gas Network analysts represent the first step on this journey in bringing gas network expertise and capability into the FSO, with the opportunity to grow into cross-vector expertise and play a key role in enabling Great Britain’s transition to net zero.

The Gas Strategic Network Planning team will provide independent strategic advice and recommendations on the gas network, including proactive anticipatory investment recommendations that support net zero drivers for change. This will include undertaking gas network capability assessments and review in the context of assessments of other energy vectors (electricity & future) and taking a strategic view of the whole energy system. The team will drive the right-sized Gas network while balancing gas network investments with other energy vectors that are required to meet future needs which drive decarbonisation.

    The role

These Gas Network Analyst roles applies systems knowledge and analytical expertise to develop gas network simulations and modelling analyses, supporting the organisation to understand customer needs, assess the capability of the network and provide recommended interventions to, while being cognisant of the regulatory obligations for gas transmission. Longer term this will move towards providing recommendations for whole system solutions.

This role will be based in Warwick or Wokingham. We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. This is a full-time role, and we offer flexible working arrangements.

    Key Accountabilities

    • Working in partnership with peer Gas Network Analysts, and Senior Gas Network Analysts to develop scenario simulations and models of the gas networks to deliver a range of business requirements, including:
    • The development of a statement of needs based on the assessment of network capability to meet supply and demand within the network
    • A cost benefit analysis of potential interventions and recommendations to then be published to NGT and Ofgem, to be fed into wider business planning
    • Increasing consideration of other energy vectors, and net zero strategies to factor into whole energy interventions
    • Understand, analyse, and transform supply and demand data to enable network scenario modelling and simulations
    • Use gas transport and distribution models and supporting tools to analyse the capability of the network to meet several probabilistic scenarios, including identifying potential issues and working with other departments to develop recommendations for interventions
    • Effectively document, visualise and communicate the results of analyses to a range of internal and external stakeholders to inform decision making and future network planning and design

    About You

    • Understanding of the gas sector – including the structure, regulatory environment and the short and long-term issues and opportunities relating to the industry.
    • Ability to analyse large amounts of data related to gas network operations and performance.
    • Ability to identify trends and patterns, identify root causes of issues and make recommendations for improvements.
    • Strong numerical ability and demonstrable logical thinking.
    • Understanding of factors that impact the movement of a gas.
    • Effective communication skills including the ability to make persuasive presentations to small audiences.
    • Ability to consider multiple priorities to develop targeted interventions

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of who we are and what we do. Our commitment to these values is unwavering and they are central to our mission. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries and we are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments that you require.

    What Youll Get

This role offers a competitive salary between £43,000 - £60,000 per annum dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.

    About Us

As the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for Great Britain we are in a privileged position. We sit at the heart of the energy system, balancing electricity supply and demand second by second. We keep the lights on and the electricity flowing directly to where it’s needed.

We are also thinking about where our energy will come from in the future and how we will operate a greener and cleaner system. One of the goals we have set for ourselves is to be able to run a zero-carbon electricity system by 2025. This will be instrumental in helping the UK meet its wider zero-carbon target.

    More Information

This role closes on April 23rd, 2023, at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary.

At National Grid ESO, we work towards the highest standards in everything we do, including how we support, value, and develop our people. Our aim is to encourage and support employees to thrive and be the best they can be. We celebrate the difference people can bring into our organisation, and welcome and encourage applicants with diverse experiences and backgrounds, and offer flexible and tailored support, at home and in the office.

We're committed to building a workforce that represents the communities we serve, and a working environment in which each individual feels valued, respected, treated, and able to reach their full potential.
