    Led by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, the UK Telecoms Lab (UKTL), announced in October 2022, will give the UK the cutting-edge technology to keep our telecommunications networks safe, accelerate the roll-out of 5G, and grow our brilliant telecoms sector by bringing in new entrants to diversify the supply chain market.

    Successful candidates will have a unique experience working on or supporting the latest ground-breaking cyber security and networking technologies on a national and international scale. This opportunity will allow those involved to have first-hand exposure to the latest technologies via the research and development that we are undertaking to secure our telecommunications networks, in order to keep the UK the safest place to live and do business online.

    As a trusted and independent national capability, the UKTL will interact at the intersection of standards bodies, such as 3GPP, the National Cyber Security Centre and the wider UK intelligence community, academia, Ofcom, as well as Communications Service Providers and telecommunication equipment vendors.

    Example responsibilities

    • Developing, maintaining and evolving the coverage and capabilities of the UKTL’s interoperability test suite.
    • Performing repeatable and consistent interoperability tests, and documenting and analysing results.
    • Communicating and justifying the impact of findings from interoperability tests to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Design, understanding the scope, limitations and effects of test cases, and preparation of suitable test specification documents in accordance with relevant high level test strategies.
    • Ensure suitable records are kept, to support QA processes, and coordinate and agree test schedules with the wider UKTL team.
    • Working with stakeholders to ensure that interoperability testing is meaningful, the extent of coverage is understood, and that suitable information is obtained on equipment configuration.

    About you

    Examples of technical skills, knowledge and experience, including:

    • An interest and aptitude for interoperability research and testing.
    • Knowledge about cloud native products and virtualised infrastructure.
    • Knowledge / awareness of telecoms and associated standards e.g. 3GPP, O-RAN, 5G etc.
    • Experience in testing telecoms or network equipment.
    • Experience in creating, validating and running test scripts.
    • Experience in designing and documenting test environments as part of a test strategy.
    • Experience in test automation frameworks, and their relative advantages and disadvantages.
    • Experience in HTTP and / or API testing.
    • Experience in analysing logs and identifying anomalies or unexpected outcomes of testing.
    • Relevant professional / academic qualifications or equivalent experience / work based learning (i.e. apprenticeship).
