Are you looking for an exciting start to your career? Do you have a keen eye for detail, a passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to really get to the heart of the matter? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you! We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual ready to learn and grow.
Welcome to the Group Internal Audit Department’s (GIAD) graduate scheme! This is your chance to dive into the world of our business, understand its inner workings, and make a real impact going forward.
So, what does GIAD do? We play a key role in helping NFU Mutual protect and sustain its assets, reputation and long-term future. Our audits involve working closely with our colleagues to get a detailed understanding of their business area, review what could go wrong and assess the steps they have taken to manage those risks. We also add further value through recommending improvements and good practice.
What you can expect
Get ready for an engaging and diverse experience! You’ll be involved in a variety of audits across our organisation as well as working on internal projects to help GIAD improve and move forward. This will comprise:
- Shadow and learn: Your first six months will involve shadowing audits to immerse you into our processes and enable you to learn the key stages of an audit.
- Increased responsibility: As you gain more knowledge, experience and confidence, you will begin supporting audits under the guidance of experienced leads.
- Leading with confidence: By the end of your first year, you’ll be in great position to lead audits from start to finish.
- Enhancing your wider skills: Your experiences will help to further elevate your stakeholder management, project delivery and communication skills.
- Comprehensive development: NFUM is a great place to learn and develop. Alongside the on-the-job training and support, you will be fully supported on your 3-year journey to become a fully qualified Chartered Internal Auditor.
- Impacting change: Play an active part in continuously improving GIAD by delivering projects and initiatives.
- Collaborative Culture: You’ll be joining a great team that values your input, supports your growth and trusts you to work in a hybrid way to deliver what’s needed.
This is the perfect place to learn about our business, grow your skills and experience, and make a real impact!
Your future
Throughout the scheme, you’ll strengthen your core skills, earn qualifications, and develop essential competencies to set you up for a successful career. You'll be fully supported along the way, with a dedicated buddy and mentor, plus a strong network of current and former graduates. As you near the end of the scheme, a careers coach will be there to guide you in planning your next steps.
It’s not all about work either. We encourage our graduates to get involved in extracurricular activities, from volunteering and organising charity or social events to representing NFU Mutual at industry events, all in line with our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.
Application process
If your application is shortlisted, you’ll be invited to complete an online assessment designed to measure your potential for success, such as your ability to learn and solve problems. The following stage is a short video interview, and the final stage will be an in-person assessment centre, where you’ll participate in a variety of activities, including a group exercise, a role-specific exercise, and a skills-based interview. These will be taking place end of November / early December.
This vacancy may close early depending on application volumes, so we recommend getting your application in as soon as possible!

Qualifications and skills
To join this scheme, you’ll need to have achieved, or be on track for, at least a 2.1 degree. We welcome candidates from any degree background, as what truly matters to us is your passion for learning, curiosity, and potential for growth. If you thrive in a dynamic environment where there’s a lot to juggle and bring a positive, can-do attitude to everything you do, you’ll fit right in!
To thrive in this scheme, you’ll also need:
- Strong communication skills, including both verbal and written – especially when it comes to report writing and making the complex easy to understand.
- Adaptability and resilience - this key as you navigate across different and unfamiliar business areas, interact with a range of stakeholders, and perform diverse types of audits.
- Time management skills and initiative with a solutions-focused mindset – this is especially important as you balance multiple audits alongside your studies
- Commercial focus – when designing our audits and recommending improvements, it’s important they are value-adding and aligned to our business goals.
If you’re able to bring these, we can teach you the rest, regardless of what subject you studied.
Work experience
If you’ve gained industry experience or completed a placement year that’s a big plus! But don’t worry if you haven’t, it’s not a must-have for the scheme. What we’re really looking for is some previous work experience where you’ve had the chance to interact with people and develop your communication skills.
