Modelling a better future for communities everywhere. Start your career journey in Finance.
About the role
The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) offers trainees a 20-day induction, in-role experience on placements, post-graduate education and pastoral care. Also, the freedom of a 2 month ‘flexi’ placement designed by you. Our programme supports you in developing skills, experience and confidence to begin your leadership journey successfully.
You’ll be on the Scheme for 2 years and 6 months - and as one of 300 trainees across 6 specialisms, you will join a network of future leaders in the NHS. Trainees earn an average of £40k in their first NHS role, after graduating from the Scheme.
Join our Finance specialism and we’ll offer you a real opportunity to shape services, find efficiencies and develop new ways of working that are better for the NHS and therefore benefit us all.
You’ll develop skills and experience in strategic and operational finance as well as financial and management accounting. No trainee day is ‘typical’, the scale of the NHS means that we have a variety of placement types and locations available. Recent trainees have worked in hospitals, reviewing cost efficiencies of operating theatres and wards – as well as in office locations, working on annual reports and pension planning. You will be given early responsibility on the scheme but also work collaboratively with operational and clinical colleagues, to ensure the financial viability of services.
We will support you to gain a professional finance and accountancy qualification from the Chartered Institute of Public and Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).
You will study for 12 modules, including Management Accounting and Financial Accounting, Audit and Assurance, Company Financial Reporting and Financial Management, submitting a strategic case study at the end of the scheme.
Trainees on all specialisms work towards a post-graduate certificate in Healthcare Leadership in their first year on the scheme. In addition to formal qualifications, trainees also participate in experiential and action learning, to develop their leadership skills more broadly.
Our Finance trainees have gone on to succeed in challenging and rewarding careers across the NHS in roles such as finance manager, business analyst, management accountant, pricing analyst and eventually senior management roles include Director of Finance and Business Partner.
“No decision is made without taking into consideration the financial implication of that decision. Make no mistake, the role is challenging. But knowing in the end your work and decisions will make a difference; this is what makes my role so worthwhile.” Krupa, Finance Scheme
Who you are
We’re looking for candidates with potential to develop into the NHS leaders of tomorrow. Our placements are challenging but rewarding and you’ll be required to undertake post-graduate study.
A commitment to improving people’s health and their experience of the NHS is crucial of course. If you’re thinking about joining our Scheme, it’s important to consider the principles and values that will become core to your role as a trainee and as a future leader. The NHS Constitution for England sets out the principles that bind together the communities and people the NHS serves – patients and public – and the staff who work for it. The Scheme, and indeed all NHS jobs, are open to eligible candidates from all backgrounds.
Our recruitment process is designed to assess your strengths. It’s not about what you’ve studied, the university you went to or the work experience you might have done. We’re interested in finding out your potential to become a future NHS leader.
