Without informatics the NHS would grind to a halt. The NHS depends on information to do its vital work and it is through informatics that this information is obtained and shared. Health Informatics explores how information technology can help the NHS address challenges to improve efficiency and patient care. Taking a creative approach, you’ll get the most from data, information, knowledge and technology to support exciting changes.

Not only will you deal with technology such as electronic patient records and decision support systems, but you’ll learn about the organisational, ethical and legal issues involved in managing health information  ̶  so you certainly don’t need to be an IT expert to be a success!

Opportunities are diverse and far-reaching: Informatics professionals are represented at every level of NHS organisations.

The training

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare in England, so your training and experiences will be very diverse too. To get the most out of it, you’ll need to be bright, bold and open-minded. You’ll also need to be flexible. You must be ready to gain exposure to the NHS at different levels, around different cultures and viewpoints - and anywhere in the country. We will expose you to plenty of NHS organisations who will help you become the best you possibly can be. These organisations are located all over England, giving you the valuable opportunity to see how Informatics is used across the country and the NHS as a whole – so if you are willing to travel to wherever the work takes you within an agreed region, then your eyes will be opened to a wealth of opportunities.

Over two years, your professional learning will include a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Informatics and a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership, both from renowned and respected education providers. At the same time, you’ll develop on the job, through a series of challenging placements. Throughout, you’ll enjoy support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and some of the best minds in the NHS.

Unique touches set the scheme apart. Your induction includes 20 days in which you set the agenda, experiencing NHS life on the frontline. So if you want to ride with an ambulance crew or observe an autopsy, you can. , You will also arrange a two-month ‘flexi-placement’ which will take you outside the NHS  ̶  it’s about you acquiring new perspectives to bring back to help the NHS.

You don’t need any previous relevant work experience, but you will need:

• Strong analytical capabilities, including the ability to solve problems

• A minimum 2:2 degree in any discipline (secured or expected) or degree level equivalent health or management qualification
