Supporting the people who give so much. Start your career journey in HR
About the role
The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) offers trainees a 20-day induction, in-role experience on placements, post-graduate education and pastoral care. Also, the freedom of a 2 month ‘flexi’ placement designed by you. Our programme supports you in developing skills, experience and confidence to begin your leadership journey successfully.
You’ll be on the Scheme for 2 years and as one of 300 trainees across 6 specialisms, you will join a network of future leaders in the NHS. Trainees earn an average of £40k in their first NHS role, after graduating from the Scheme.
HR managers in the NHS work to create a safe and positive work environment, support frontline workers, provide pathways to grow capability right across the organisation and positively impact patient services.
You will work at both a strategic and operational level to understand the complex needs of the organisation. You’ll have a key role in advocating for and promoting the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda, to ensure parity of treatment and experience for all staff groups.
On placement, you might be involved in managing recruitment, implementing new systems such as inductions or staff appraisals, implementing health and well-being strategies or workforce planning to support the development of new services.
HR trainees study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management with De Montfort University. Modules include: Managing Organisational Change, Human Resource Management in Legal Context and Investigating Business Issues from an HR Perspective. After graduating from the Scheme, you will become a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
Trainees on all specialisms work towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. As well as academic study, trainees participate in experiential and action learning, to develop their leadership skills more broadly.
HR specialism alumni left the scheme to continue their career within the NHS in roles such as Resourcing Manager, HR Manager and Assistant HR Business Partner.
“The work I do varies every day. Recently I have been working alongside our Employee Relations team to review sickness absence, as well as supporting investigation meetings for grievance, disciplinary or conduct. Prior to this, I was recruiting vaccinators and admin staff – that’s been the highlight of my experience so far.” James, Human Resources
Who you are
We’re looking for candidates with potential to develop into the NHS leaders of tomorrow. Our placements are challenging but rewarding and you’ll be required to undertake post-graduate study.
A commitment to improving people’s health and their experience of the NHS is crucial of course. If you’re thinking about joining our Scheme, it’s important to consider the principles and values that will become core to your role as a trainee and as a future leader. The NHS Constitution for England sets out the principles that bind together the communities and people the NHS serves – patients and public – and the staff who work for it. The Scheme, and indeed all NHS jobs, are open to eligible candidates from all backgrounds.
Our recruitment process is designed to assess your strengths. It’s not about what you’ve studied, the university you went to or the work experience you might have done. We’re interested in finding out your potential to become a future NHS leader.
