    Optos is a leading medical device company engaged in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of ultra-widefield retinal imaging devices.

    Our imaging devices can be found globally, in opticians, optometrists and hospitals where clinicians can take an optomap® image of the retina which facilitates the early detection, management and effective treatment of disorders and diseases such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related degeneration.  The image can also indicate evidence of non-eye diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and certain cancers.  Optos is committed to utilising the latest technology to manufacture new products and software that support optomap® as a world-class standard of care, helping eye care professionals around the world save sight and lives.

    Role summary

    We are currently looking for Hardware Engineer Graduate Trainee to join our Research and Development team based in Dunfermline.

    This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated team of engineers working for a company who are the world leaders in retinal imaging products. You will be responsible for designing and developing electronic systems and modules for new retinal imaging products and existing retinal imaging product improvement as part of a multi-disciplinary R&D team.

    Essential duties and responsiblities

    • Assist with the design of innovative analogue/digital electronic solutions in accordance with design control process.
    • Have strong input to the technical specifications, documented design, and efficacy of electronics design output.
    • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) & design review.
    • Contribute to peer review of designs of other R&D electronics engineers.
    • To have input to product and technology roadmap with regards to emerging technologies for performance improvements and cost reduction.
    • Contribution to continuous improvement of existing product range through design analysis and innovative technology solutions.
    • Provide customer support in a pro-active manner in the form of creative solutions to problems encountered with the product.
    • Responsible for the timely delivery of electronics design solutions against project requirements.
    • Responsible for development and execution of test methods for design verification of hardware components, modules and systems.
    • Communicate design intent and operational work-flow of designed electronic systems to product engineering staff.
    • Contribution to continuous improvement of design and development processes.

    Minimum qualifications

    • A recent graduate, educated to degree level (2:1) in electronics or equivalent.
    • Degree level hardware-based project or similar.
    • Competence in fundamentals of analogue/digital electronics design and analysis.
    • Appreciation and understanding of other design functions which are directly impacted by electronic design e.g., mechanical, VHDL, Firmware.
    • Practical skills in assembly and debug of electronics.
    • An ability to manage time effectively.
    • Team orientated, responsive and customer focused.
    • Good written/verbal communication skills, with some experience of presentations.
    • Good computer skills (MS Office applications).
    • Experience of schematic capture, layout and simulation tools.
    • Results oriented, driven and dynamic, bringing energy to everything you do.
    • Passionate about continuous improvement.
    • Thrives working cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
