At Penguin Random House, we make books for everyone because a book can change anyone. Our ‘Lit in Colour’ programme is at the heart of how we bring this mission to life every day.

Lit in Colour aims to support UK schools make the teaching and learning of English Literature more inclusive of writers of colour. Research we commissioned in 2021 found that fewer than 1% of English literature students study a book by a Black, Asian or minority ethnic author at GCSE.

We’re now recruiting for a Social Impact Executive to support our award-winning Lit in Colour programme. As part of Penguin’s Social impact team, you’ll be part of a team working closely with partners including schools, exam boards and other publishers to help drive meaningful change.

You’ll also find new ways to get young people excited about books by writers of colour and discover new and classic texts, focusing on children and young people up to the age of 25.

    What you'll do

In this role, some of your key responsibilities will include:

    • Working closely with our Senior Social Impact Manager to develop and deliver our youth engagement strategy for Lit in Colour, finding ways to talk directly to young people including through TikTok, Instagram and events.
    • Leading the design, production and management of events that are key activation moments for our Lit in Colour youth engagement.
    • Managing an efficient workflow to ensure publication and dissemination of high-quality resources for primary and secondary school teachers, including managing freelancers and uploading resources to our channels.
    • Supporting all significant Lit in Colour book donations to schools across the UK, including liaising with inventory management and distribution teams.
    • Supporting key Lit in Colour external partners to ensure effective stakeholder maintenance, including attending key meetings and being the main point of contact for these relationships in collaboration with our Senior Social Impact Manager.
    • Providing additional administrative support to ensure the smooth running of the programme.

    What you'll need

To succeed in this role, you will:

    • Have strong organisational skills, ensuring the efficient delivery of activities whilst keeping to timelines.
    • Be a collaborative team member within the Social Impact team with great interpersonal skills, able to build strong relationships with multiple stakeholders both internally and externally.
    • Be a creative thinker and remain curious about the work we can do to develop our Lit in Colour campaign.
    • Be an active ambassador for the company, with occasional public speaking opportunities at festivals or events.
    • Be able to balance a variety of projects, so project or event management experience is useful.
    • Have some experience working with young people or in a school environment.
    • Have passion for connecting audiences with contemporary or classic books by writers of colour.

    Our approach to hybrid working

While our offices are places for you to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, having flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing. So, we don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to how we work across Penguin Random House UK.

For this role, there are some meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person mainly at our offices in London. Outside of these moments, you can choose to work remotely.

The exact balance of office to remote working can be discussed with your future manager during the recruitment process. What we can say now is that you won’t need to go into the office five days a week (unless of course you want to!)

If you’re excited by this opportunity and want to learn more, please apply with your CV and cover letter by Monday 7th August.
