The Material Characterisation Team provide analytical support to the Pfizer manufacturing network. We provide advanced analytical and characterisation methods to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of materials, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, process intermediates, final dosage forms and packaging components. This data is used to support troubleshooting investigations, forensic particulate identification and new material supplier evaluations.
About the Role
We are seeking an undergraduate level scientist to work within a team of diverse, self-motivated and focused colleagues. You will work with a project lead supporting the analytical work using a range of material characterisation methods to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of materials, understand the solid-state properties and material assessment methods to understand flow and other attributes linked to the manufacture of solid dosage forms. The techniques may include microscopy, particle size analysis, powder rheometry, spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and high-performance liquid chromatography.
Other responsibilities will include:
- Working in partnership with a project lead to support pharmaceutical manufacture troubleshooting investigation.
- Evaluation of novel materials characterisation technologies and development of existing technology platforms.
- Determination of physical properties of active ingredients and raw materials using a range of characterisation techniques.
- Determination of solid state attributes for active ingredients and raw materials using a range of characterisation and thermodynamic techniques.
- Conduct a research project to expand a topic relevant to expanding the team’s capability and understanding.
- Evaluating, interpreting and reporting of results through presentations and technical reports.
- Contribute to laboratory duties including 5S / lean lab.

Who You Are
Type of person we are looking for, in relation to ‘Skills’, ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Motivation’:
- Completing placement as part of University Degree either through Year In Industry/Industrial Placement or Gap Year
- Good laboratory skills and appreciation of the importance of Health & Safety
- Sound scientific judgement and innovative problem solving.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interest in subject and show desire and ability to expand knowledge, learn and develop.
- Drive for results and ability to deliver under pressure.
Applicants must be completing placement as part of a degree course at a UK University, either through Year in Industry/Industrial Placement or Gap Year.
