The job-holder will work in the Experimentation Team of our Weapons Science group. Within Weapons Science, our teams come from a variety of engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, ex-military and related backgrounds. They are critical to the assessment of future capabilities to be used by the military (such as robotic and autonomous systems) and for research and advice on those capabilities, including weapons systems (from long range missiles to small arms pistols) and the detailed technologies that enable their use. They help our customers ensure that these critical assets perform effectively and safely.
This particular role primarily involves working in the broad field of army experimentation programmes, such as the Army Warfighting Experiments (https://www.army.mod.uk/our-future/awe/) and Human Machine Teaming (https://www.army.mod.uk/our-future/human-machine-teaming/) programmes.
This role will initially be based at our Fort Halstead site, where the majority of the team from (with others based at Farnborough and Boscombe Down). Once training is completed both hybrid working and other locations would be considered. In addition, the role requires a reasonable level of physical fitness and the ability to be away from home for extended periods to support experimentation activities.
Challenges with the role include
- Contributing to technical programmes in the army experimentation area.
- Have the ability to become proficient in a wide range of technical and engineering skills, taking responsibility for utilising these skills to perform experiments and report their results.
- Be flexible and adaptable to the many and varied challenges faced by this role.
- Suitable physical fitness and resilience to work with soldiers within field trials and experiments.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide individual contribution to technical teams to ensure that programmes are delivered effectively and meet customer requirements and expectations.
- Support liaison with colleagues, customers and other stakeholders to ensure delivery.
- Jointly authoring customer reports (e.g. experimentation plans and reports) to meet customer requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Capabilities/Knowledge
- An aptitude and willingness to develop skills and knowledge across the land domain, in particular advanced experimentation programmes and weapon systems.
- Good oral and written communication skills, including report writing.
- Good listening and questioning skills, as well as interpersonal, analytical and team working skills.
- Personal resilience to handle competing demands and setbacks.
- Knowledge / familiarity of Army / Marines structure and operating methodologies, although desirable, is not essential.
Experience and Qualifications
- A first degree in Science or Engineering.
- Job involves travel in UK (and potentially overseas) and periods away from home.
