The Early Careers Challenge is one of the highlights of the graduate training. About the opportunity

You will be part of our established and very successful UK Environment & Health team, getting involved with a diverse range of desk-based and site-based work. Previous education will be an important foundation, but your willingness to learn new environmental concepts and pick up new working practices quickly will really make the difference. It is a great opportunity to join a dynamic team of experts and build a successful career within the environmental consultancy sector.

Your key tasks and responsibilities are likely to include

  • Assisting with Environmental Impact Assessments including Flood Risk Assessments, and Water Quality Assessments;
  • Input to design of features related to the water environment, such as river diversions, culverts, bridges and scour protection;
  • Problem solving by helping to find practical solutions to project needs, e.g. water treatment, sustainable drainage (SuDS) design and floodplain compensation, while having an appreciation of constraints such as available space, cost and programme;
  • Co-ordination with other junior colleagues, undertaking and assisting with the day-to-day work required to deliver projects while cognisant of programme and budget;
  • Support to develop strategy/concept drainage design incorporating SuDS;
  • Assisting with environmental permit applications; responding to project briefs, preparing calculations, reports and plans/figures;
  • Site visits and attending meetings; and
  • A degree of liaison with clients, contractors, architects, regulators, planners and other professionals.

Your skills and experience

For this role, we believe your starting point is:

  • A BEng/BSc within Geography, Hydrology or similar topic; an MEng or MSc in an environmental discipline, but this is not essential
  • Have experience with IT packages including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Be numerically competent;
  • Possess excellent English communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Have excellent report writing skills

Selection Process

We aim to have applications shortlisted by the beginning of March and we will invite successful candidates to an assessment centre at the beginning of April in our Birmingham office.
