    Internship

    We seek candidates in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) for Collins Aerospace Applied Research and Technology in Cork, Ireland.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in one or both of the following fields:

    • Structural optimization with fiber composite materials, including structural-mechanical and thermo-mechanical loading, optimal design of structural and general system health monitoring systems, including optimal sensor placement.

    The ideal candidate should have a broad understanding of system development and integration across multiple disciplines.  Knowledge in multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization, structural and fluid simulation, lightweight engineering design, hydrogen systems as well as model-based systems engineering is advantageous.

    We are searching for an Intern to contribute to the following areas:

    • Implementation and use of parametric simulation models for use in optimization
    • Structural optimization with fiber composite materials
    • Design of structural systems and health monitoring systems.
    • Documentation of implemented methods and results

    Basic qualifications

    • Expert knowledge with finite-element analysis tools, e.g. ANSYS, NASTRAN, ABAQUS
    • Computer programming skills in Python, MATLAB
    • Demonstrated capacity to apply optimization methods to real-world problems.
    • Familiarity with gradient-based and non-gradient-based optimization methods.
    • Experience with software development and version control, i.e. git.
    • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
    • Ability to work in an international team and with different cultures.
    • Be interested in interdisciplinary research and complex research questions

    Education requirements

    Preference will be given to candidates currently enrolled in a Ph.D. M.S. degree program with aligned graduate research area Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or similar field is required.
