As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will work proactively and collaboratively within a commercial team, reporting to the designated Senior Quantity Surveyor. Your role is to support the provision of commercial advice, governance, and assistance to ensure the safe, sustainable, and efficient delivery of highway works and related services.

    Acting as a responsible steward of public funds, you will contribute to the effective management of costs and contracts in a way that delivers clear and demonstrable value for money. This will be achieved while maintaining alignment with business objectives and supporting the achievement of both team and individual performance targets.

    The role

    • Take full commercial responsibility and ownership of all allocated works.
    • Ensure robust commercial processes are established and consistently followed.
    • Manage the supply chain effectively, including timely payment assessments and strict adherence to change control procedures.
    • Collaborate with key stakeholders through regular reporting on cost, cash flow, risks, and opportunities, while providing accurate budget forecasting.
    • Support additional ad hoc duties as required, with flexibility to shape the role and work autonomously within a supportive, development-focused environment.

    About you

    • IT Proficiency (Essential): Solid working knowledge of general IT systems, particularly Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
    • Industry & Educational Background (Desirable): Ideally educated to degree level (or working towards it), with experience in Construction, Civil Engineering, Highways, or Infrastructure environments—especially under NEC contracts. However, transferable skills and a commitment to learning are equally valued.
    • Proactive & Positive Attitude: Demonstrates a can-do mindset, seeks win-win outcomes, and embraces continuous improvement in both self and processes.
    • Strong Interpersonal & Commercial Skills: Self-assured and results-driven, yet humble and collaborative. Commercially aware with strong negotiation skills and a proactive approach to preventing disputes.
    • Independent & Motivated Work Style: Able to work autonomously with minimal supervision, effectively managing time and priorities to meet shifting deadlines.
