Clinical Operations comprises of hundreds of people, who run phase I - IV clinical trials across a wide number of indications in Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Ophthalmology and Neuroscience. Individuals within these therapeutic areas are responsible for providing operational project management, leadership and expertise and act as the interface between Roche and external parties for optimal study delivery. Note this is not a laboratory based role.
The Insights & Analytics group in Clinical Operations uses a mix of Data Analytics, Patient & Investigator/Site Insights, Scenario Planning & Forecasting, and Competitive Intelligence to provide strategic operational insights to clinical trial teams.
As an Industrial Placement Student in the Insights & Analytics group, you will have the opportunity to blend and extend your experience on different initiatives to further develop both the breadth and depth of your capabilities, aligned with our mission to inspire & co-create meaningful, data-driven insights that optimise trial delivery and value for patients and investigators.
The role
We are looking for Industrial Placement Students (IPS) who will be based in Welwyn Garden City, UK, working within the Insights & Analytics group in Global Clinical Operations. The IPS will collaborate closely with Community Leaders to understand business needs and priorities, and work within cross-functional teams and global communities to develop analytical solutions and deliver on impactful business insights to enable better decision-making. The role will drive insights aligned to specific studies/ programs, and with enabling work to support the whole ecosystem of Clinical Operations.
As part of the global community, the IPS will have many opportunities to tailor their learning and development into areas that they have greatest passion for and to expand their experiences to gain a broader understanding of the drug discovery process.
Key activities may include:
- Translating patient needs and realities of living with disease as well as current and emerging treatment practices in a way that allows for optimised patient engagement practices
- Building understanding of investigator/ site needs and experience, including pain points and opportunities, for streamlining investigator and site-level burden
- Developing tools for automating data processing, cleaning and manipulation, and deliver analytical business solutions to the Clinical Operations organisation (for example, using tools such as Snowflake and Python, for the acquisition and analysis of data)
- Communicate findings by compiling and analysing relevant information, synthesising key actionable insights, and delivering impactful formal and informal presentations to key Clinical Operations stakeholders
- Evaluate competitive clinical trial activities, country/site footprints and threats to develop rigorous team assumptions about key competitors, and provide situational analysis support for quarterly business reviews and early clinical trial planning.

- Support enablement of broader and more effective use of insights and/or analytics that drive and support decisions
About You
Applicants should be currently undertaking university education in a relevant scientific subject (e.g. Biological/ Biomedical Sciences, Mathematics, Data Science, etc.).
- Proficiency in standard analysis and presentation software (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint) is a must
- Passionate and curiosity about drug development, data analytics, and business intelligence
- Good problem-solving ability, breaking down complex problems into distinct parts, managing uncertainty, understanding, and anticipating interdependencies
- Effective communication, organisational and time management skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Preferred (but not required) skills include knowledge of database querying (e.g. SQL) and data analysis, statistical analysis, predictive modelling & forecasting, familiarity with business intelligence tools (e.g. Spotfire, Tableau), basic understanding of clinical research and disease mechanisms
