An exciting opportunity exists for a high quality, highly committed Engineering Technician to join the Materials, Chemistry & Corrosion department in Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby. The team supports the entire product lifecycle, including design, manufacture, in-service support and decommissioning for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant. Good data management and manipulation skills will be highly beneficial in this role. It is not essential to have a materials science, chemistry or corrosion background but basic knowledge in any of these disciplines will be beneficial in the role.
You will act as technical secretary for project reviews across the scope of the materials, chemistry and corrosion discipline and as a point of contact for incoming queries and track their progress through to resolution, providing metrics on queries completed within the Service Level Agreement timescales.
This is a predominantly office-based role requiring substantial interaction with engineers from a range of disciplines. International and national travel may be required in this role. What you’ll be doing
You will maintain databases of technical information such as design data, ensuring the quality of data available is maintained at a high standard.
- Analyse data from product manufacture, operation and testing to generate statistics and metrics.
- Support the introduction of new technologies through the Rolls-Royce Product Change process.
- Support the laboratory team with sample retention and storage, maintaining consumable stocks and ensuring equipment availability.
- Support continuous improvement activities.
Who we are looking for

- You will be educated to A-level or equivalent in an engineering or scientific discipline. Further Higher Education qualifications such as HND would be beneficial. Preferably, you will have relevant industrial experience in an engineering environment.
- You will be able to communicate technical and non-technical information effectively, both in written and verbal formats.
- You will be proficient in the use of standard PC-based software applications.
- A basic understanding of statistics would be highly beneficial.
- Knowledge of the use of Excel Visual Basic for Application (VBA) and Azure DevOps would be beneficial.
