This role is within our specialist Innovation Reliefs team which assists companies in the preparation of claims for Research & Development tax relief. We work with companies across all sectors, most notably manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, software and digital technologies to assist them to identify and prepare tax relief claims in respect of qualifying R&D and development activities. Ultimately these reliefs incentivise businesses to undertake additional R&D activities via a tax relief mechanism which either reduces corporation tax payments or generates payable credits from HMRC,

We wish to attract graduates with a degree across science, engineering, technology or information technology (IT), eg computer science, to utilise knowledge in these areas towards helping businesses identify, assess and quantify their eligible R&D activities, whilst having access to wider tax experience and qualifications.

What can you expect?

Our programme will provide you with an opportunity to build deep R&D tax relief knowledge and also give you a solid foundation in a broad range of tax issues. With us, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising with and visiting clients to preparing and completing R&D reports and corporation tax returns. The variety of work we do and the range of clients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover a career path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our support you’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take on ever-more challenging tasks.

At RSM, you’ll gain hands-on experience alongside access to on-the-job mentoring. You’ll also be able to access our expert training programmes and have the opportunity to work towards the ATT qualification. After completing your ATT, our internal mentors can help you decide whether you then study towards the CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) qualification or joint CTA/ACA qualification and will give you all the support you need to make a confident decision about your next step. You will be working directly with members of the team who joined RSM through the same graduate programme, being directed by senior staff across the region. This route has been proven to work and we will offer the opportunity through the recruitment process to speak with individuals who have been through the programme to get a ‘real world’ view on what to expect, both with the day job and studying requirements.

What we look for

Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so we look for graduates who are always up for a challenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. We also look for team players who can communicate clearly and are curious about how businesses work. While you don’t have to be a maths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers. Our Innovation Reliefs team look for graduates with a scientific, technological or IT background as this provides a real edge amongst your peer group. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.
