RTI International seeks a prospect for the Operational Research Internship, Neglected Tropical Diseases within the International Development Group.
The NTD strategic investment portfolio is currently undertaking a number of exciting operational research projects to which the intern will contribute. Selected ongoing examples include: understanding drivers, such as water and sanitation conditions and migration of persistent and recrudescent trachoma in Mozambique and Tanzania; using artificial intelligence and satellite imagery for population mapping in areas of Tanzania with ongoing transmission of trachoma; exploring the use of new biomarkers for integrated disease surveillance; and establishing impacts of climate change on populations served by and threats to effectiveness of NTD control programs.
The intern will assist with coordination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) research activities under RTI’s NTD strategic investment portfolio and participate in initiatives to further NTD thought leadership within the Act to End NTDs | East program. We are looking for candidates with strong analytical and technical writing skills and excellent organizational skills. They will sit within the Global Health Division (GHD) and collaborate widely across GHD and other divisions at RTI.
Learning Objectives
- Intern will gain experience conducting international research, including: study design, budgeting and forecasting, protocol development, and ethical review; data collection in low-resource and often remote settings; data management, analysis, visualisation, and interpretation; and results dissemination through technical writing and presentations.
- Intern will gain experience working within a dynamic, fast-moving, and large-scale implementation program alongside ministry of health and other institutional partners and collaborators.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to development of concept notes, protocols, tools and training materials for new activities and assist in ushering these through ethical reviews
- Contribute to analysis and interpretation of quantitative data
- Contribute to activity report writing and development of communications and publications
- Manage meeting agendas, meetings, notes, and other administrative tasks as needed

Additional Information
This virtual paid internship will take place from November 2023 through April 2024. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled or recent graduate of a Master's program in Control of Infectious Diseases, Global Health, Epidemiology, or related discipline
- Experience conducting public health research
- Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
- Proficiency in statistical and GIS software (e.g. R, QGIS).
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to work well with others as well as independently
- Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Demonstration of RTI Values and Lead Forward behaviors
Preferred Qualifications
- Local to the UK
