This role is based within the Central Belt of Scotland operating within the SPEN boundaries and your base location will depend on your home proximity to a SPEN depot or head office. This is used solely for the purpose of business mileage expenses when travelling to/from Construction sites.

Day to day job shadowing will be on different projects sites of which the candidate will move between projects, learning both management skills related to managing Construction sites and technical aspects associated with Transmission Construction activities, for example, civil, cable, electrical & overhead lines.

Salary

This is a permanent full-time contract after the successful completion of the programme. The salary for this role will be from £33,440 per annum, depending on the candidate’s background and experience.

The start date of the contract is the 27th of May.

Purpose

The aim of this trainee programme is for candidates to become a fully qualified and competent Site Manager specialising in transmission construction management for our SP Transmission plc (SPT) business. The SPT Site Manager is responsible for planning, managing, coordinating and monitoring all contractors’ on-site activities through the review of all pre-task planning.

The trainee programme will consist of a high degree of on-the-job learning and training, as well as online distance learning by accredited CIOB (Chartered Institute of Builders) training providers for those candidates that need this.

Responsibilities

  • Establish & implement a safe working culture holding the role of Client Representative or Principal Contractor.
  • Provide technical knowledge and support during the construction stage with the ability to manage the construction & commissioning stages.
  • Develop and implement a wide range of activities in collaboration with different departments including implementing the safety management system, environmental management and mitigation, quality management including inspection and testing, quality control for materials and equipment.,
  • Lead on-site management of a contract, coordination of work activities, managing contractor programmes, writing accurate and detailed daily records, chairing weekly progress meetings, validation and measurement of the works as they progress. Establish positive and collaborative working relationships.
  • Lead the collaboration of the design change process with the Engineering Dept & ensure that all contractor as-built information is collated as the project progresses.
  • Lead the interface with SPT operational staff including Protection Engineers and Senior Authorised Persons to understand & implement safety from the system. Schedule all booking requests and contractors booking requests through Transmission scheduling in line with notification periods.

Skills & requirements

There are two different pathways to develop depending on candidates experience and background.

  • Candidates with practical experience:

The successful candidate will be enrolled on a development programme for supervisors or less-experienced managers provided by training partners of the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB). Through successful completion of the development course, you will attain a CIOB Certificate and Diploma in Site Management (CDDSM) qualification. The training will be carried out through online distance learning and evaluated coursework.

This programme would suit candidates who have experience in the transmission sector at a supervisory level with experience of working on major construction projects, for example, transmission substations, overhead line and or high voltage cable project delivery.

The candidates should be able to demonstrate specialist technical knowledge in their discipline and must have had responsibility for leading a team or package of works they will also require good IT skills and a clean driving licence.

  • Qualified candidates lacking experience:

This programme would suit candidates who have already attained electrical or civil engineering, or a construction management qualification who are interested in working in a construction and major project environment but have not had the opportunity to gain on-site firsthand experience.

Most of the training provided will be on the job learning with practical coaching and mentoring from fully qualified and experienced Site managers and Construction managers.

The duration of the development will be dependent on the individual and existing qualifications held. Only candidates that have been fully qualified from further education for a year or less will be considered.

The candidates will require good IT skills and a clean driving licence.

Successful candidates of both pathways should expect the training programme to take between eighteen months to two years for completion.

On successful completion the trainee will be promoted to an entry level Site Manager salary. Moving from a collective salary grade 4 to 5.
