    It has been recognised that in coming decades the whole UK railway system must be decarbonised to meet our climate commitments and to reduce the cost of operating the railway. This makes it a very exciting time to be joining railway electrification in the UK as new electrification projects are authorised and a new generation of protection and control systems for the electrification network are being developed.

    The role

    This graduate role is to start on 11 th August and will be based in the Product Design Team within Siemens Mobility - Rail Infrastructure based in Coventry.

    The Product Design Team within Siemens are responsible for Digital Substation development and switchgear design in the UK. We also look at opportunities to manufacture our products within the UK to lower the carbon footprint of our products and increase the benefit to the local economy. You will be working within a dynamic and driven team which is delivering electrification on all major UK electrification projects.

    Within the Product Design Team, you will learn the basics of HV product design with a view to assisting the team to make the very best products available to the market. You will be responsible for the production and development of design deliverables together with all other associated documentation and supporting design drawings, as assigned by a leading engineer.

    About you

    The candidate would be expected to a have strong academic background in engineering, ideally an electrical bias or power distribution with a willingness to be based at a location different to your contracted location for a period of up to six months within your two-year graduate scheme (funded by Siemens).

    • Undertakeall design calculations (from first principles if required) for assignedprojects within the Rail Electrification portfolio. These include, but notlimited to, lighting, cable and battery sizing calculations.
    • Undertakesite surveys and produce site reports.
    • Responsiblefor ensuring that all works are carried out safely.
    • Toproduce fully compliant suitable outline and detailed designs of tractionsubstations to meet the requirements of the project. This includes designreports, drawings, schedules and risk assessments.
    • Tosupport all design team members (e,g. Project Engineers, Design / Senior DesignEngineers, Engineering and Design Managers etc.), as required, to ensure wedeliver an integrated solution for the customer.
    • Topositively influence design and construction safety performance and aims forzero accidents (Siemens Zero Harm policy).
    • Tomaintain effective communications with all project participants (client,stakeholders, suppliers etc) to ensure successful contract delivery.
    • Toensure all designs meet client and regulatory standards.
    • Toensure that all project designs are compliant with CDM regulations.

    What else do I need to know?

    During your two-year graduate scheme, you will spend roughly one year working within your home discipline from the roles above. You will also have the opportunity to undertake two six-month long placements in other disciplines in electrification or elsewhere within Siemens Mobility.

    Depending on the placement, you may be working away from your contracted location for the length of these placements (funded by Siemens). In addition, you should be aware that there is a certain level of travel and staying away from home required for all roles.

    For the duration of the graduate scheme, you will take part in technical and professional training, with technical training delivered by the top engineers in the business over the course of several weeks. During these training weeks you will also have a chance to meet and challenge other early career professionals across Siemens Mobility and discuss different experiences, building connections for your burgeoning career.

    Expect to be given the freedom to test theories and designs, then to be challenged on them from the other members of the team. As Siemens is at the forefront of new technology, you will be able to learn about, in detail, the technologies that Siemens are developing to disrupt the way that transport is thought about in the UK.
