Are you a forward-thinking and aspiring undergraduate in your final year? Join our graduate programme and see for yourself how it differs from any other. Could this be the next exciting step on your journey to your career? If yes, start your graduate programme with us at Siemens Mobility!
This is your chance to learn about how our work impacts everyday life across the world and you could be there at the centre of that work. From learning how a line of code develops into millions of downloads, to exploring the depths and heights of our varying transport projects, build your skills and see how you can be here with us, shaping the future.
Siemens Railway Electrification teams are delivering decarbonisation of UK rail on a large scale from initial system modelling and design, through design, manufacture and installation of novel power converters, high voltage switchgear, protection and control, and overhead line. This is a unique opportunity, to be part of a team of experts that is redefining what is possible in UK rail electrification.
About the role
As a Graduate Engineer you will learn how to undertake outline and detailed design of railway electrification systems, initially under the supervision of experienced engineers but rapidly taking on more responsibility. You will follow the progress of your designs through site construction and problem-solving, gaining a strong understanding of novel electrical power converter project delivery.
However, as an Electrical Digital/Software Engineer, you will bring your passion for creation of applications, data analysis and software coding to improve the efficiency and performance of railway electrification systems, from automation of design, creation of software interfaces, to prediction of asset failures before they occur. Building on your understanding of electrical systems, your career will develop with focus on application of digital and software technologies.
The role will develop according to the capabilities and passions of the graduate, applied to the challenges of current projects. This may involve creation of code from C++ to Java; programming of advanced engineering tools such as Siemens Sidytrac, Engineering Base or Matlab Simulink; development of cloud architectures and interfaces; data mining and machine learning; or app development using established tools. The common strand is the objective of improving efficiency, reliability and safety of design and operation of power engineering systems.
Opportunities also exist to become a network and cyber-security specialist involved in designing, reviewing, hardening and testing communication systems within our specialist teams.
In addition to office based design, there will be a requirement to undertake site surveys and liaise with other disciplines and clients. Successful candidates will soon develop a detailed knowledge of railway infrastructure and how different engineering and non-engineering disciplines work together to create the whole system in a safety critical environment.
The challenge
Begin your journey with us whilst taking part in our fantastic graduate development programme. We will create an individual training plan to help you develop the specific skills and knowledge required for your role. By the end of it, you will be set up with the best knowledge and hands-on experience to equip you for your professional career in Siemens.
- Support the team in the quality delivery of design activities (and other placement activities) with enthusiasm and attention-to-detail;
- Within the bounds of a Graduate Engineer take ownership of efficient, high quality design and construction activities;
- Apply your passion for digital and software technologies to improving processes, design tools, and assist in the development of new solutions applying digital techniques to improve safety, reliability and performance of electrical power infrastructure;
- Collaborate with design teams to produce documents such as electrical diagrams, mechanical models, schedules and reports;
- Maintain continuous communication with colleagues and customers to ensure coherent design and customer satisfaction.
- Explore opportunities to innovate and improve efficiency, such as standardisation, automation of design, or use of new software techniques;
- Produce and maintain full reports and records of all works;
- Maintain a professional standard of conduct at all times, reflecting Siemens’ company values;
- Maintain technical and safety standards in all aspects of design work in order that successful project implementation and future reliability is achieved.
- Discharge safety responsibilities in relation to CDM Regulations, Health and Safety legislation, Company procedures and project Safety Plans.
The candidate
We are looking for innovative and inquisitive candidates that demonstrate the following:
- Achieved or be on track to achieve a 2:1 or above in a electrical/electronic engineering or software related degree. Passion for the use of software or digital techniques to deliver new capabilities and make electrical systems and their design safer, cheaper, and faster
- Strong experience in the creation of new software or applications, whether part of your studies or personal interest. Candidates must be experienced in the use of at least one programming language to create software or tools;
- The drive and self motivation to achieve Chartered or Incorporated Status and to continuously develop your technical & behavioural skills.
- You think logically, willing to self-learn and research, and take a creative approach to problem solving
- You can work independently, safely and responsibly; take ownership of challenges and ideas and are looking to develop your ability to drive and lead change
