Siemens Digital Industries Software (DISW) is driving transformation to enable a digital enterprise where engineering, manufacturing and electronics design meet tomorrow. Our solutions help companies of all sizes create and demonstrate digital twins that provide organisations with new insights, opportunities and levels of automation to drive innovation.

Simulation and Test Solutions (STS) is a division of Siemens DISW, it is a world-class player in the field of Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), we develop engineering simulation software for the analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer.

Using our software and consulting services, customers accelerate and optimise their designs by predicting the behaviour of proposed models before building physical prototypes. Our software products are used by mainstream design engineers, not just by analysis specialists, and are based around four lines of business:

    • Thermo-fluid system design (used in Automotive, Aerospace, Power & Process industries)
    • General purpose CAD-embedded CFD (used in a wide variety of fluid flow applications)
    • Electronics Cooling
    • Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC)

    The role

STS has been offering engineering student placements for many years and has a great track record of giving students an excellent grounding in our technologies.

The engineering work will involve using our products to analyse or build models of equipment and systems then, using the principles of fluid flow, heat transfer and CFD, you will use these models to verify and validate that the software is producing correct results. You will work with experienced Software Developers who will fix any deficiencies that you find in the software, and you will suggest improvements to the software to make it easier to use and to eliminate user error.

Working as part of a team that meets daily, ensuring that help is always on hand when needed. Through the teamwork, you will learn about the Agile management methodologies that are employed in the development of our products and will gain a good understanding of a wide range of skills associated with Software Engineering.

We offer 10 engineering intern positions over 2 locations namely Nottingham and Towcester. The roles range from pure CFD/CAE related testing roles to roles where you can develop your software programming skills!

    Simcenter Flomaster

Simcenter Flomaster is a system simulation CFD software developed in Towcester, and you will be part of the Development/Quality Assurance teams. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills on software engineering by adding and improving features in Simcenter Flomaster. This role will encompass the task of writing tests for validation and verification using the automation provided by Microsoft Azure DevOps Server enabling faster development of quality software.

While working primarily on Simcenter Flomaster, you may also get the chance to learn other engineering software that can be linked to Simcenter Flomaster, such as Simcenter FLOEFD, Simcenter Amesim, Simcenter 3D and MATLAB. Depending on the role, you will also get the opportunity to develop interesting CFD models demonstrating the capabilities of the software. You may also get opportunity to create Knowledge Base articles and product training material.

The Simcenter Flotherm suite of products are developed in Nottingham, and you will be part of the Quality Assurance team responsible for testing the software. In these roles you will be working on different CFD products such as Simcenter Flotherm and Simcenter Flotherm XT. You may also work with other products like Simcenter Flomaster and Simcenter FLOEFD. You will learn how to apply CFD to solve real engineering issues by working alongside our domain experts. Some of the roles involve Test Automation, scripting, and running performance tests and you may also get involved in helping to create product training and marketing material.

One of the positions offered in Nottingham is focussed on testing Electronic Design Automation Integration software. In this role you will develop PCB models using software such as Xpedition and HyperLynx for testing Simcenter Flotherm XT EDA Bridge. You will also develop your skills in using ECAD and MCAD while working with these software products. Students studying for a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or similar are preferred for this role.

    Requirements/Skills

    • Students should be studying at a UK university for a degree in Engineering
    • An interest in mathematical modelling and CFD are especially valued for the 9 CFD specific roles
    • For Simcenter Flotherm roles the ability to use CAD or similar software is an advantage. For Simcenter Flomaster roles, an interest in programming and software development is required, and any programming experience is valued
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • The ability to work well and collaborate in a team, but also able to work independently when required
    • Being on track for a First or 2:1 in your respective degree program

All the roles require self-learning. Ideal candidates are self-motivated, have desire to learn new technologies, like problem solving and have ability to think analytically

Note: Please provide a cover letter along with their CV for applying to this role. Candidates specifically interested in the Electronic Design Automation testing role should mention the same in the cover letter.
